Expert UFC 273 Picks, Predictions & Best Bets
Jairzinho Rozenstruik vs. Marcin Tybura
In a battle of top-10 heavyweights, Jairzinho Rozenstruik will take on Marcin Tybura. This fight seems fairly binary to breakdown. Rozenstruik is a high-level kick boxer and will want to use his range and power, and Tybura will want to wrestle, get the fight down to the mat and implement his ground and pound. Rozenstruik has a ton of power in his hands and can end the fight at any instance, as all six of his UFC wins have come by knockout. His losses in the UFC came to the cream of crop in the division: A knockout loss to Francis Ngannou and decision losses to Ciryl Gane and Curtis Blaydes. The game plan for fighting Rozenstruik is always to take the fight to the mat. He is defending takedowns at a 75% clip, which is actually pretty good, but it is a tad misleading because, in the Gane fight, Gane was 2-for-14 on takedown attempts but a lot of them were pretty bad shots. In the Blaydes fight Rozenstruik was taken down three times and controlled for over six minutes on the mat. On the other end of this fight, Tybura will be looking to get back in the win column after getting his five-fight win streak stopped by Alexander Volkov. In that fight Tybura was unsuccessful on all of his 16 takedown attempts. Volkov is extremely hard to take down, and while Tybura has good wrestling, he isn’t an elite wrestler like Blaydes. If Tybura comes in against Rozenstruik with a wrestling-heavy game plan again, he will get him down to the mat. If Tybura can avoid getting knocked out and get this fight down to the mat each round, it is conceivable he could grind out two of the three rounds to win a decision. Since Rozenstruik is not the best on the mat, it is also possible for Tybura to end this fight inside the distance. There is no reason to bet the method of victory prop here, as the bettor is already getting plus money on the moneyline in this spot.
Best UFC Betting Pick: Tybura +135 (Caesars)
Petr Yan vs Aljamain Sterling
In a rematch of their title fight in March 2021, Petr Yan will look to regain control of the division after a DQ loss to Aljamain Sterling. A lot of people thought Sterling would have the advantage wrestling in the first fight, but they were wrong. Yan took down Sterling seven times on seven attempts before being disqualified for an illegal knee in Round 4, and Sterling was only 1-for-17 in the takedown department. Illegal knee aside, Yan was dominating that fight and was well on his way to winning. There are very few holes in Yan’s game, as he is truly one of the most elite fighters in the UFC, period. It is clear from the first fight that Yan will have the advantage anywhere this fight goes. The one area where Sterling could win is if he catches Yan in a transition on the mat and locks up a submission. It is definitely not a probable path for this fight ending, but it is possible. Sterling landed more significant strikes in the first bout, but Yan was landing the more damaging strikes, including a knockdown. In this fight expect much of the same, and Yan will want to send a message that he never should have lost the belt in the first place. It is a bit surprising that the fight going the distance is favored, but getting plus money on under 4.5 on this type of fight feels like value that cannot be passed up.
Best UFC Betting Pick: Yan/Sterling Under 4.5 Rounds +104 (FanDuel)
