Cougars Looking to Stop Losing Streak

BYU hasn’t been impressive this season. Most people would tell you that the Cougars haven’t played up to expectations, especially following their home win over Baylor, since the win was immediately canceled out with a road loss to Oregon the next week.

You can still give the BYU AD props, as the Cougars have the 25th-best strength of schedule and still have averaged 29.4 points per game. BYU usually has the best talent on the field, including star QB Jaren Hall, who has 21 touchdowns and 3 interceptions on the year.

The main weakness of this team certainly isn’t its offense. Rather it is BYU’s rush defense which frequently gets tested. With that part of their game somewhat hopeless, the real question in this one is if BYU can score offensively. Luckily, Hall has proven he can do just that.

Boise State ranks 12th in the nation, allowing just 17.4 points per game. But, the catch is that it hasn’t played anyone strong, which is inflating their numbers. Boise State has a good run defense which suits them well, and its pass defense numbers are also strong. However, it sits at 123rd in the nation in strength of schedule. The Broncos play in a weak Mountain West conference and have two quarterbacks that have combined for just 10 touchdowns and 7 interceptions on the season.

The Broncos are overrated and are more than touchdown favorites against a good Cougars team that has been tested often this season. I would back BYU here as it should be a good rebound spot for their current four-game losing streak.

Aggies Have Multiple Ways to Attack

New Mexico will head north to take on Utah State in a game that is expected to be a one-sided battle. The Aggies are more than two touchdown favorites, and it still may not be enough points for Utah State.

Simply put, New Mexico’s offense is terrible. The unit has been outgained by over 100 yards per game this season. QB Miles Kendrick has 3 touchdowns and 7 interceptions on the season and completed just 58.7% of his attempts. Neither Kendrick nor starting RB Nate Jones have over a 4 yards-per-carry rushing average, so even assuming they try to work it on the ground more, there isn’t much reason to think they’ll be successful at it. At the same time, New Mexico has the 102nd-worst strength of schedule and allows 24.1 points per game.

New Mexico isn’t great at limiting the run or pass, so it will really be Utah State’s option here on how they want to expose the Lobos, a team that has two of their four conference games by at least two touchdowns. Meanwhile, behind RB Calvin Tyler Jr., who has 717 yards and 2 touchdowns, the Aggies have a solid run game. They have yet to win a game by this amount, but New Mexico might be one of the worst teams on their schedule, so expect the Aggies to come out firing.

Final New Mexico-Utah State Prediction: Utah State -15.0 (-107) BetMGM
