Iowa State vs. Kansas Odds, Best Bets & Prediction: Jayhawks Cover in a HUGE Big 12 Matchup (October 1)

After the first few weeks of the season, the Big 12 is shaping up to have a season to remember. Aside from the usual powerhouses from the past few seasons, there are some teams looking to make a name for themselves. One of these teams is the Kansas Jayhawks. At 4-0, Kansas continues to make their case as one of the title contenders in the Big 12.

In their way this Saturday is the Iowa State Cyclones, who sit at 3-1 on the year. This is another program that has put together some solid seasons in the past few years, and this matchup will test both programs as conference play is now in full swing.

Iowa State vs. Kansas Week 5 Betting Picks & Predictions

Kansas Looks Unstoppable

It is still very early in the season to talk about the big picture, but Kansas looks like a very dangerous team so far. Jalon Daniels should be a Heisman finalist if the season ended today, posting the best total QBR in the FBS right now, and he is coming off of a dazzling five-touchdown performance in a huge non-conference win last week.

This offense has been explosive and has left Jayhawk faithful on the edge of their seats. The question mark that remains for the Jayhawks is their defense, specifically shutting down the passing game. The Jayhawks have been giving up over 8 yards per pass attempt and 264 yards per game, which will have to improve against a conference known for a prolific passing attack.

Cyclones Stay Consistent

Head coach Matt Campbell is now in his seventh year with the program, and he has put a competitive program on the field year in and year out. It can be very hard to win in the Big 12, yet the Cyclones have been able to hold their own. One major question for the Cyclones is their passing game. Quarterback Hunter Dekkers needs to improve on throwing the ball downfield if the Cyclones want to compete with an electric Kansas offense. Iowa State is 119th in the country in average yards per pass attempt, and the run game needs to continue to improve as well.

While Kansas may have had success with putting up points early on, the Cyclone defense will be a tough test for them, as Iowa State ranks 14th in total defense. This will be a difficult matchup for Iowa State, and a win will be crucial for the Big 12 race.

Kansas vs. Iowa State Prediction

This is a huge game for early-season position in the Big 12, and it will be one that should stay competitive throughout. Kansas comes into this contest as a 3-point underdog, and the game total is 59 points. The spread comes as a surprise given how well Kansas is playing, but from the looks of it, Vegas needs to see more from this undefeated team. The Jayhawks are 4-0 against the spread, and as long as their offense keeps rolling and their defense can limit big plays, their hot streak could continue and they should cover this 4-point spread on Saturday.

The 59-point total is an interesting number to look at in this matchup. The over has hit in three out of four Jayhawk games this season, and the Cyclones have hit the over in two out of four of their games. There will be a lot of scoring on Saturday as Kansas looks to continue to prove doubters wrong with their dynamic offense, and the Cyclones will have to keep pace for four quarters. This game should hit well over this 59-point total and will make for a classic Big 12 showdown.
