Purdue vs. Michigan Prediction & Odds: Bettors All Over Wolverines in Big Ten Championship

This could be the year that Jim Harbaugh’s University of Michigan Wolverines finally get over the hump. The Wolverines will take on the Purdue Boilermakers this Saturday in the Big Ten championship. The title game comes after Michigan defeated rival Ohio State last week for the second consecutive season. Michigan is a heavy favorite and bettors have been all over there side so far. Despite the public confidence, there is a lot to breakdown to make the best Purdue-Michigan prediction and pick for Saturday’s championship matchup.

Check out the latest betting odds & trends below, per BetMGM:

College Football Odds: Purdue-Michigan Odds

  • Purdue: +17 (-110)
  • Michigan +17 (-110)
  • Moneyline: Purdue +600, Michigan -850
  • Total: Over 52 (-110), Under 52 (-110)

According to BetMGM’s John Ewing, 77% of bets and 89% of early money is on Michigan to cover the spread. 40% of bets and 92% of money is on the Boilermakers moneyline as heavy underdogs. 79% of bets and 85% of the money is on the over to hit.

The biggest storyline for Michigan coming into the game will be centered around star running back Blake Corum, who was considered a Heisman candidate before suffering a knee injury against Illinois two weeks ago. Luckily for Michigan, they didn’t need Corum much against Ohio State. He carried the ball just two times for six yards before leaving with the lingering injury. Backup running back Donovan Edwards was able to step up in a big way, running for 216 yards and two touchdowns, including two long touchdown runs in the second half.

Corum was honored with the Big Ten Running Back of the Year Award on Wednesday. He ranks third in the Big Ten in rushing yards (1,463), third in average rushing yards per game (121.9) and second in touchdowns (18). Prior to the injury, he was No. 1 nationally in touchdowns scored and No. 4 in rushing yards.

Before running away from Ohio State last week, Michigan struggled without Corum against a tough Illinois defense the week prior. The Wolverines were barley able to sneak away with 19-17 win thanks to a game-winning field goal from Jake Moody in the final minute.

For Purdue, it’s been a much less glamorous trip to the Big Ten Championship game, but someone had to win the much-weaker Big Ten West. Needing a win over lowly Indiana to punch their ticket to the game against Michigan, Purdue was stagnant offensively early, but eventually pulled away in the second half. In the end, they earned a 30-16 win over the Hoosiers. Purdue is coming off three straight wins and will need to have their best performance if they want any shot at beating Michigan.

Final Purdue-Michigan Prediction & Pick:

Look for Michigan to control the pace of this game from the start, but expect a little bit of a let up after such an emotional win last week, especially if Corum is still hindered by the knee issue. College football bettors have been heavily leaning toward the Michigan side at these odds. However, expect Purdue to keep it close enough to cover a large spread on a neutral site.

Final Purdue-Michigan pick: Purdue +17
