David Montgomery Injury News: Chicago Bears Release Update on Running Back After Leaving Game vs. Texans

The Chicago Bears will be without running back David Montgomery for the remainder of their game against the Houston Texans on Sunday afternoon.

In the first quarter, Montgomery was helped off the field by the Bears’ training staff after getting tangled up while serving as a blocker on a passing play.

Shortly thereafter, the Bears announced that Montgomery would be doubtful to return to the game with a knee/ankle injury.

Without Montgomery in the mix, the Bears will hand the bulk of their running back duties to backup Khalil Herbert, who also saw some time last year when Montgomery missed some time with a knee injury.

This offseason, the Bears also added to their running back room when they selected Tristan Ebner from Baylor in the sixth round of the NFL Draft. Still, they have left the door open to potentially continuing to add more running backs in the future.

“We have to have runners, you know, different pace runners,”head coach Matt Eberflus said before the season. “We have a good runner now. We’re going to add some other pieces in there, potentially.”

Last season, Montgomery ran for 849 yards and seven touchdowns and added 42 catches for 301 yards. Through the first two weeks of this season, he has already accumulated 148 yards on the ground.

The Bears leaned on Montgomery early and often during their Sunday Night Football showdown with the Green Bay Packers last week, passing the ball just 11 times throughout the 27-10 loss to their rivals at Lambeau Field.

The severity of Montgomery’s injury remains to be seen, but we’ll continue to monitor the situation for updates. The Bears entered the game as 3-point favorites at home.
