2022 Bermuda Championship First Round Leader Bets: Will Gordon’s Experience Puts Him Up Top in Shallow Field

The 2022 Bermuda Championship will run for the fourth time at Port Royal Golf Club this week, the largest golf course on Bermuda. Just because Port Royal shares the moniker of longest golf course on the island doesn’t mean that it’s long by PGA standards. This venue stretches barely over 6,800 yards and will be a full 600 yards shorter than last week’s venue, despite them both being par 71s. As far as tee times, past first-round leaders at Bermuda have slightly favored morning waves, but a balanced approach would be warranted as well.

Below are top first-round leader picks for the 2022 Bermuda Championship using OddsShopper’s golf betting tools.

2022 Bermuda Championship First Round Leader Bets

Best First Round Leader Betting Picks

Will Gordon First Round Leader +5000 | BetMGM

Will Gordon has a late-afternoon tee time, which will see him go off the No. 1 tee in the final group of the day. If the rain does appear in the early afternoon and then passes through quickly, he could see a more receptive course.

Weather predictions aside, Gordon is the type of player to target in this market. He’s an experienced player who has played in a lot of weaker field events on the PGA and has been in solid form in the fall. He made the cuts his last two starts have both yielded made cuts and had rounds of 66 and 65. Furthermore, his putter has carried him at times and has been good for him of late, gaining him multiple strokes in two of three starts this fall.

Gordon at +5000 or better in this field looks like a solid target, and an extremely late tee time could also hugely benefit if the weather clears up after midday.

Michael Gligic First Round Leader +6600 | BetMGM

Like Gordon, Michael Gligic is a big hitter off the tee who has shown the ability to get hot with his short game and putter. This very much puts him in the same kind of profile of player as last year’s winner, Lucas Herbert, who bomb and gouged this course into his first ever PGA win.

Gligic has tailed off a bit in terms of his form after a solid late summer of results, but he has typically elevated his play at these secondary events. He was fourth at Punta Cana in 2021 and 11th at this event last season. Gligic is also a fast starter, ranking top 50 in first-round leader scoring last year, and he opened with rounds of 67 or better five times in 2021-22. With an earlier tee time, he offers some good morning wave exposure and has solid odds given his history at these offshore events.

Longshots

With another weaker field, this is a good opportunity to pursue first-round leader bets with a basket of players that have longer odds. OddsShopper is also a great resource for comparing odds across the major sites.

Chesson Hadley First Round Leader +6000 | BetMGM

Chesson Hadley has made his living at these events. His only PGA Tour win came at Puerto Rico nearly 10 years ago, and he’s grabbed top-20 finishes at both Punta Cana and Bermuda over the last two seasons. He comes into this week playing some relatively consistent golf, having now gained strokes on approach in five straight starts.

Last fall, Hadley put in a couple of quick starts, posting rounds of 63 and 64 at the Shriners and RSM Classic. He’s been showing confidence with the putter and has an early-afternoon tee time, which adds exposure to the p.m. draw as well.

Akshay Bhatia First Round Leader +13000 | BetMGM

Akshay Bhatia is a pure talent-based play in a field that resembles a PGA Latin America event. He turned pro while still a teenager and reeled off his first win on the Korn Ferry Tour last season while playing in an event overseas in the Bahamas. He hasn’t been able to turn that success into a full-time PGA gig yet, but he’s not that far from accomplishing the feat.

While Bhatia missed three cuts in a row in the Korn Ferry playoffs, he missed most of those cuts on the number and perhaps was feeling too much pressure in a bid to get his card. He can go all out this week, and at a massive betting number, Bhatia makes sense as a dart throw for Round 1.
