2022 FedEx St. Jude Championship Sleepers: How to Bet Hideki Matsuyama, Corey Conners & Matt Kuchar

All of the usual suspects, top names in golf and potential breakthrough candidates will be at this week’s FedEx St. Jude Championship. The larger field of top talent like Rory McIlroy, Scottie Scheffler and Cam Smith may draw more tickets at the top of the board, but recent history has shown mid-range shots have a legit chance of winning this event. Below we’re looking at the best 2022 FedEx St. Jude Championship longshot golf bets for the week and trying to be the ones posting the HUGE PAYOUT screenshots on Twitter.

Editors Note: Hideki Matsuyama has withdrawn from the tournament due to a neck injury.

In a field this tight with top-level talent, especially with most of them playing outstanding golf against tougher fields, the longshots begin to tighten. Finding the best number is always the key, but it’s reinforced when taking someone in the +3500 to +5500 range. There’s going to be an obvious reason why the golfer is listed as a longer shot in a heavier field, combined with a recent pathway to attaining victory. Hideki Matsuyama at 40-1 is a great number for someone with fantastic recent success at St. Jude. Beyond losing in a playoff in 2021, Matsuyama has been deadly with his wedges and high irons, gaining strokes on his approach shots in each of his last three appearances. He’s secured wins at both the Zozo and the Sony in Hawaii while also finishing top four at the U.S. Open. His last three tournaments were awful, with a 68th-place finish at the Open Championship, bookended by a missed cut and withdraw. If Matsuyama is focused and healthy, he’s far better than his current odds.

Best Longshot Outright Winner: Hideki Matsuyama (+4000, BetMGM)

One great thing to take advantage of is laddering longer shots like Matsuyama. It helps mitigate some risk while maximizing the return when one of these guys does go on a tear. Outright Honorable Mention | RISK FREE Bet at BetMGM

This is a shoutout to Ben Rasa on the Putting for Dough show for bringing up Corey Conners, and rightfully so given the 65-1 number next to his name. Conners fits the bill for TPC Southwind, making up for any lack of distance by securing solid second shots and setting up scoring opportunities. He’s become a subtle favorite in the mid- to longer range. Conners ranks fairly high amongst this deep field in some key areas, including strokes gained off the tee (6th), strokes gained tee to green (13th) and total strokes gained (18th). Hitting greens in regulation and avoiding bogeys are going to be areas where a longer shot can separate himself from the field, and Conners comes in fourth overall in greens in regulation on tour. This is a superb opportunity to play the number at 65-1 more than anything else.

Top 40/20 Ladder Bet | RISK FREE Bet at BetMGM

If there is one stat to focus on for someone in the longest of range, it’s bogey avoidance. This isn’t the only metric, but it’s one that can help identify someone who can simply make the cut more than flat out win the tournament. Matt Kuchar is one of the best golfers on tour in avoiding bogeys, ranking fourth on the entire PGA Tour. It’s enough — combined with how well he can play with his irons and his consistent putter — to lock in a top-40/20 ladder. The plus money on top 40 essentially bets him to make the cut, something that seems to be a sweat in its own right.

Best Ladder Bet: Matt Kuchar (Top 40 +140, DraftKings)
