2022 Shriners Children’s Open Sleeper Picks: Martin Laird Long Odds Are HUGE Value in Weaker Field

Swing season is in full effect as plenty of younger golfers are looking to make their stamp on the game. Things get a little more difficult this week with a deeper field –  as the likes of Sungjae Im, Max Homa and Patrick Cantlay will play in Las Vegas. TPC Summerlin isn’t a difficult course and requires some fairly low scores to secure victory. More recent winners have proven themselves on tour, either in another event or this one. Golfers like Cantlay – who has spoken openly about this being one of his favorite courses – and Homa, create more top-heavy odds, which opens up the door for strong longshots!

Below we’re looking at the best 2022 Shriners Children’s Open longshot golf bets for the week and trying to be the ones posting the HUGE PAYOUT screenshots on Twitter.

It’s a little easier to forget the last two events being MC for Martin Laird if we look at the recent success he’s had on tour. Maybe Laird was just biding time for his favorite event – at least going off his past performances. Laird is a two-time winner – both coming in the playoffs – and lost another in a playoff. It’s a safe assumption that no matter how poorly he’s playing, Laird knows Summerlin well and has a shot to compete here. Coming with his strong finishes are incredible performances in gaining strokes to the field. He’s fifth on the list of the current field in SG: Total at TPC Summerlin over the past five years.

This is a true longshot by definition but this course doesn’t demand much from golfers. While it’s going to take a monster week to beat out guys like Cantlay and Homa, such is true for the remainder of the field. The easier course allows for a wider net for mistakes and mitigates a sharper advantage on a tougher course – like longer iron striking. Laird can easily maneuver his way around the course and the field with his prior knowledge, and at a number over 100-1, it’s certainly worth a shot.

Contrary to his own opinion, I do listen to Ben Rasa on Putting for Dough on the OddsShopper channel. He mentioned a strong longshot candidate on the show, one that I took a deeper look at with his chances and recent play. One thing to remember at Summerlin, something that should stand out far more than most courses on tour, is the forgiveness with iron striking. This can create a true angle for a golfer who is doing pretty much everything else well but struggling with consistently hitting his longer irons. Enter Stephan Jaeger and his 130-1 ticket.

Jaeger has shown up and played well in both events so far in Swing season, with T-43 at Fortinet and T-30 at Sanderson. He’s putting the ball at an extremely solid clip, third in the field in SG: Around the Green. He’s also gaining strokes with his approach shots, 26th in this field in SG: Approach, which should help his recent struggles with his longer irons. If Jaeger can get off the tee then this course won’t require as much from a longer second shot, and that’s the key for a long shot like him to succeed.
