2022 World Wide Technology Championship Sleeper Picks: Patrick Rodgers and C.T. Pan Are Good Bets in Mexico

There is a healthy balance for the 2022 World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba, with some power names atop the world of golf and some newer faces looking to make a run. Swing season has mostly provided the latter, with a sprinkle of top names here or there. The lure of a resort-like atmosphere and giant purse make for appearances from the likes of Scottie Scheffler, Tony Finau and two-time defending champion Viktor Hovland. The best part about a somewhat weighted field is mid-range golfers can still benefit from some longer odds.

The course is short and can change drastically depending on how severe the weather gets. Strokes gained off the tee come in multiple fashions, including precise par-3 tee shots or stretching out shorter par 4’s. It’s also a course that isn’t highly demanding when it comes to scrambling around the greens, as evident by the most recent winner two times over. Unlike last weekend in Bermuda, there is a little less pressure on how someone is playing overall versus their course history. While golfers like Emiliano Grillo and Billy Horschel know this course in and out, there should be extra emphasis on how hot a golfer is coming into this weekend — especially with longer odds.

That’s exactly where Patrick Rodgers is, sitting at an astounding 80-1 to win outright. He’s +100 to finish top 40 and comes off his fourth straight made cut. Each of his last four starts have seen better performances, including a tie for second last week at Bermuda. While his top-20 tee-to-green game will certainly be a point of emphasis for putting him in scoring positions, it’s actually a major struggle area that should be less of a concern this weekend. Rodgers is making cuts and competing with similar fields each week, despite being 75th in strokes gained around the green and 174th in strokes gained on approach. His putting is also of concern, but it’s been consistent enough to score and prevent any blowups.

At 80-1, Rodgers is simply playing much better golf right now. He’s also doing it against fields that aren’t any weaker overall — for the most part — than this one in Mexico.

Outright Honorable Mention

The reality is this course is designed for someone like C.T. Pan to take full advantage of longer odds. Be it his inability to play longer courses at a consistent lever or not taking advantage of shorter circumstances that benefit his game, Pan has a good chance this weekend to change it. There are a few scoring par 4’s and 5’s that should minimize yardage lost off the tee for Pan, while his ability to shape shots off the tee will come in handy. Much like Rodgers, Pan isn’t going to do anything without stabilizing his putter, but it’s worth a look at this course.
