Morocco World Cup Odds: Shift Following Upset Win Over Spain

Morocco has pulled off the miracle. Despite coming into the 2022 World Cup as a heavy betting underdog to make a run, Morocco on Tuesday was able to keep Spain, which was one of the top favorites to win the tournament, off the scoreboard before winning in penalties to reach the quarterfinals. Morocco was +1100 (per FanDuel) to reach the quarterfinals prior to the World Cup.

With Morocco’s Cinderella World Cup run continuing, it is still a long shot (+3500) to win the tournament. It will play Portugal (+650) on Saturday morning, after it defeated Switzerland 6-1 on Tuesday.

Morocco reached the World Cup quarterfinals for the first time in its history and has used a defensive-minded approach to do so. It came into the Round of 16 having conceded just one goal all tournament -- an own goal -- and was able to pull out the clean sheet again against Spain.

This time, it was goalkeeper Yassine Bounou who was able to rise to stardom, stopping penalties from Sergio Busquets and Carlos Soler, and forcing Pablo Sarabia to hit the post after Morocco was able to stave off a flurry of chances from Spain in extra time.

Morocco will certainly celebrate the triumph, but then will set its sights on trying to become the first Africa nation to ever reach the World Cup semifinals. All tournament long, it has been a heavy underdog and slept on by the media pundits. But it has somehow been able to answer the bell time and time again.
