It is always interesting to see where the season started and compare it to where it is now. At the beginning of the year there were some huge betting favorites for the major awards like MVP and Cy Young, and other than Jacob deGrom, the rest did not hold up their end of the bargain. After reviewing the first half of the season and the players who made great strides, we need to take a look at the new MLB betting to see if there are actionable numbers. Below we will outline the best MLB picks and bets to make for the American League and National League MVP, Cy Young and home run champions.
MLB Betting Picks, Odds & Predictions
AL & NL MVP Picks
NL Favorite: Jacob deGrom -110
DeGrom is an unprecedented favorite for both National League Cy Young and MVP. He is posting statistics previously unheard of by any starting pitcher. However, deGrom has had injury scares throughout, and as the Mets medical staff has had a somewhat checkered history of making good decisions regarding their pitchers, he is a stay-away despite being the favorite.
NL Longshot: Nick Castellanos +3500
Nick Castellanos has been nothing short of incredible since making the transition to the National League. This season he has taken many steps forward, the most important being improving his barrel rate and reducing swings and misses. This has led to an MVP campaign and great numbers across the board. While Fernando Tatis Jr. is the second favorite for MVP, the hot weather in Cincinnati throughout the dog days of summer is going to lead to many home run and RBI chances for Castellanos. He is the dark horse to walk away with MVP if deGrom’s health falters.
AL Favorite: Shohei Ohtani -350
This one does not require much analysis. While Vladimir Guerrero Jr. keeps putting up amazing numbers, there is no way to match Shohei Ohtani, as he has been incredible hitting and pitching this year. Mike Trout was the early MVP favorite but has since gone down with an injury, further directing the spotlight fully on Ohtani. There really is no debate here; Ohtani is going to be the MVP, but his odds are so short right now that this bet is a stay-away.

AL Longshot: Vladimir Guerrero Jr. +220
This is not a recommended bet, but Guerrero should be mentioned since he is having an MVP-worthy season himself. It is simply impossible for a batter to overshadow someone who is doing what MLB has not seen since the likes of Babe Ruth, and thus Guerrero has taken a back seat in the MVP debate. Ohtani’s production should continue, so any betting on this category is ill-advised at this point.
AL & NL Cy Young Picks
NL Favorite: Jacob deGrom -1000
This is another bet that is worth a stay-away. DeGrom is such a heavy favorite at this point, and even an injury is not going to move the needle much because he is head and shoulders ahead of everyone else. Marvel at his pitching prowess and just be grateful for locking him before the season at longer odds.
