How to Bet on UFC Vegas 37: Expert UFC Betting Picks

Anthony Smith vs. Ryan Spann

Smith is back in another main event. It is odd for Smith to be a favorite in a high-profile fight, as he has been an underdog in three of his last four main events against Jon Jones, Glover Teixeira and Alexander Gustafsson. A five-round fight favors the durable Smith here, as Spann has a questionable gas tank and this will be his five-round debut. While Smith will be in danger early on while Spann is fresh, Smith has only been knocked out twice in his past 10 fights, but that is a bit misleading. He took an absolute beating late from Teixeira and still made it to the fifth round and took a nasty body kick from Thiago Santos. The Teixeira stoppage is more important because, despite the beating, Smith survived late into the fight. Unless Spann knocks Smith out cold, he does not have the gas tank to ground and pound Smith for multiple rounds.

The Bet: Anthony Smith -170 (DraftKings Sportsbook)

Pannie Kianzad vs. Raquel Pennington

Kianzad will be taking on Pennington in a classic striker versus grappler matchup. Pennington will want to grind on Kianzad against the cage and get her down to the mat. Kianzad will want to keep the fight at range and use her jabs and kicks. In a smaller cage Kianzad will have to rely on her footwork to remain at range, and over the course of three rounds there will be some clinch work against the cage. Pennington has failed to secure more than one takedown in each of her last five fights, so even if Kianzad gets caught up against the cage a few times, Pennington will have issues taking her down. If Kianzad can keep this fight at range, she will have a very big advantage in the striking department. This is a tough fight to target on DraftKings because the cage clinch work should make it a low-scoring fight, but this is a good fight to bet because at this stage in their careers Kianzad is the better fighter.

Longshot Prop: Emily Whitmire vs. Hannah Goldy

In the long term, betting on low-level women’s MMA is a low-EV play. However, this line seems off, and at these odds the size of the bet does not need to be large at all to pay off. Whitmire is taking on Goldy in the first fight of the night, and it does not get much lower level than this. That said, Whitmire’s gameplan will always be shooting for submissions, and she does not have a plan B. Her striking is inferior to Goldy, so standing and trading would be awful fight IQ. If Whitmire can get to the fight to the mat, she will be live for a submission.

The Bet: Whitmire by Submission +800 (DraftKings Sportsbook)
