BetRivers 400 Race Preview

Dover is a one-mile, high-banked, concrete oval. It’s unlike any other tracks on the circuit but compares most favorably to Bristol. Its concrete surface rewards drivers who can handle tire wear, so Darlington is another solid comparator track, albeit a somewhat limited one. I’ll also look at the results from the only concrete track the Xfinity Series has visited this season, Martinsville.

The betting markets favor series veteran Justin Allgaier (+300), with Chandler Smith (+350) close behind him. Last year’s winner, Ryan Truex (+500), is another one of the favorites. He’ll pilot the No. 20 Toyota in this race. Cole Custer (+500) wraps up the list of drivers with odds of +500 or shorter at DraftKings. All four drivers deserve their short odds, but I’m more interested in the options down the odds board.

Over the last three races at Dover, only three other drivers in this year’s field even have top-5s here: Sam Mayer (+1000), Austin Hill (+1200) and A.J. Allmendinger (+1600). Further down the board, Sheldon Creed (+2500), a teammate of Smith and Truex, clocks in with surprisingly long odds for a Joe Gibbs Racing driver. Rookie Taylor Gray (+2800), another JGR driver, clocks in just behind Creed.

Also notable is Carson Kvapil (+3500), who will pilot the No. 88 Chevrolet for JR Motorsports. Team owner Dale Earnhardt Jr. has reserved the No. 88 ride for short-track stars like Kvapil, and this will be his second start in the car this season. He piloted the No. 88 to a P4 result at Martinsville in his debut — but he did need some help late in the race from various cautions and restarts.

BetRivers 200 Bet: Sheldon Creed (Finally) Gets it Done | NASCAR Xfinity Series

I’m limiting my action to just one driver in this weekend’s Xfinity Series race at Dover. We’re backing veteran Sheldon Creed to pilot his No. 18 Toyota to a win — and if not a win, at least a top-5 result. He should’ve gotten one at Martinsville (and had a shot to win late in the race, too), so let’s trust him to get redemption this weekend.

Creed has performed well at the four tracks I considered when handicapping this event. He nearly won at Martinsville this year (and finished P6). Last year (in worse equipment), he finished P11 at Dover after leading 42 laps. He finished P8 the year before.

Creed has also put together strong runs at Bristol and Darlington. In 2022, he finished P2 at Darlington in the fall after leading 47 laps. He was also knocked out at Bristol after leading 34 laps.

Creed didn’t have great showings at those tracks last season, scoring one P8 and one P11 in two starts, but I’m willing to overlook that since he was getting far worse equipment than his teammate, Austin Hill, because of Richard Childress Racing’s weird team dynamics.

In the Truck Series, Creed led the second-most laps here at Dover before getting crashed out in 2019, recording the fifth-best driver rating in the process. He also has a pair of dominant wins at Darlington and a dominant win at Bristol that should’ve resulted in a win after he led 189 of 198 laps from the pole. Creed will get his, and he is trading for odds that are far too long at the moment.
