Kristaps Porzingis Injury News: Center Could Miss Start of Road Trip for Improving Wizards

Kristaps Porzingis may not be available to play for the Washington Wizards on Tuesday or Wednesday after the forward had tests Sunday for an ankle injury. The latest Kristaps Porzingis injury news came after he left a 138-118 win against the Orlando Magic on Saturday night.

“I don’t think it’s too bad, but fingers crossed,” Wizards coach Wes Unseld Jr. told The Athletic.

Washington begins a five-game road trip at the Dallas Mavericks on Tuesday and at the Houston Rockets on Wednesday.

Porzingis is averaging 22.1 points and 8.1 rebounds per game, each in the top 25 in the NBA. The Wizards have won nine of 15 games since losing 10 in a row and 13 of 14.

“We’re winning games that we’re supposed to win,” Porzingis told The Associated Press late last month. “We had a tough schedule in December and now it’s getting a little bit easier.”

The center is averaging an NBA career high 7.0 free throw attempts per game, and 5.8 makes (82.6%).

“The coaches love when you can get to the free throw line because it’s 1.6 points per possession, depending on what percentage you shoot,” he told NBC Sports Washington. “So, it’s one of the most effective things you can do on offense.”

Rui Hachimura tied his NBA career high with 30 points against Orlando, but it came with reports that Washington is exploring trades for the forward. Rui Hachimura has not started a game this season, averaging 13.0 points and 4.3 rebounds in 24.3 minutes per game.

“Loved his aggression off the bench,” Unseld told the Washington Post. “Once he sees one or two go in, that kind of gets him going. He stretched the floor, made a 3, and I think once that dynamic happens, they get to running him off [and] he gets to his midrange.”
