Types of Bets to Make on the Super Bowl

Point Spread

This is the most popular type of NFL bet. The sportsbook sets a point spread, which represents the number of points by which a team is favored or an underdog. Bettors can then wager on either side of the spread. If you bet on the favorite, they must win by more than the spread for your bet to be successful. If you bet on the underdog, they can either win the game outright or lose by fewer points than the spread.

Moneyline

In a moneyline bet, you simply pick the team you think will win the game. The odds indicate how the betting public is playing each side, and the payout varies accordingly. Favorites have negative odds, while underdogs have positive odds.

Over/Under (Total)

This involves predicting whether the total combined points scored by both teams in a game will be over or under a certain number set by the sportsbook.

Looking back to Super Bowl 57, the total for Chiefs-Eagles was over/under 51.5. Since the game ended up 38-35 Chiefs, the total ended up actually being 73. Therefore, the over hit.

Team totals are also popular total plays. The principles are the same as with game totals, only the score applies for just one team. The individual overs hit for both teams in the 2023 Super Bowl, as the Chiefs’ and Eagles’ team totals were both in the mid-20s. With both squads eclipsing 30, it was a big over day across the board.

Props

These are the bets that get much of the action from novice bettors, as they cover all the things beyond the outcome of the game. These could include in-game action like passing yards or anytime touchdown scorer, or they could be for less significant things like the outcome of the coin toss, the length of the National Anthem or the color of Gatorade poured on the head coach after he wins.

Here are some of the results of props from Chiefs-Eagles in Super Bowl 57:

  • National Anthem Length: 121.99 seconds (the line was 126.5 seconds, so the under hit)
  • Coin Toss: Tails
  • Gatorade Color: Purple (+750) — this was the longest winner in the history of tracking Gatorade color odds
  • First Touchdown Scorer: Jalen Hurts (+700)
  • Anytime Touchdown Scorers: Hurts (three), A.J. Brown, Travis Kelce, Nick Bolton, Isiah Pacheco, Kadarius Toney, Skyy Moore

Parlay

Parlays can be the most rewarding bets — especially on Super Bowl Sunday — but they are also the riskiest. A parlay combines multiple individual bets into one overall bet. For a parlay to win, all bets within it (called legs) must be successful. The potential payout for Super Bowl parlays is higher because of the increased risk.

For some real fun, you can try multi-sport parlays, which are offered by the OddsShopper Parlay Builder. The process is the same as with NFL-only parlays, but you can combine NFL bets with other sports that are going on, such as NBA. And luckily for us, there are two afternoon NBA games on Super Bowl Sunday this year, so we have some options:

In-Game (Live) Betting

Bets are made during the game as it goes on, and the NFL odds fluctuate in real time based on the game’s dynamics, including scoring, turnovers and other factors.

Halftime, First Half, First Quarter

Halftime wagers are placed on the results of the game’s second half, including point spread, moneyline or totals specific to that period. First half and first quarter bets are the same as halftime bets but focus on the outcome of the first half or quarter.

There are a number of factors to consider when making Super Bowl bets, and some of the more interesting data points are betting trends. These can help give you an idea on a macro sense how Super Bowl bets tends to take shape. Remember, these are meant only as another element to consider; they should not be the be-all and end-all of your Super Bowl betting decisions.

Super Bowl Favorites vs. Underdogs

Over the last 11 seasons, seven of the Super Bowl winners entered the game as underdogs on the moneyline. However, three of the last six winners were favorites: The Rams (2022), the Chiefs (2020) and the Patriots (2019). The longest moneyline underdog winner in the last 10 Super Bowls was the 2015-16 Broncos, who were +180 to beat the Panthers. The shortest moneyline favorite to win was the Rams over the Bengals in 2022.

As for the spread, those Broncos are the biggest underdogs to win, doing so at +5. The 2021 Rams team, at -4.5, was the biggest favorite to win — though covering that number was a different story.

Did the Winner Cover the Spread in the Super Bowl?

Of the four winners who entered the game as favorites, the Rams were the only one that failed to cover the spread. So the winner has covered the spread in nine of the last 10 Super Bowls.

Super Bowl Totals

Totals in the last 10 Super Bowls have been the game lines most subject to trends. The over and under have hit the same number of times in that span — five apiece — but only once has the same side of the total not won in multiple consecutive Super Bowls.

The over hit for Chiefs-Eagles in 2023, but the under was the winner in the five of the last six Super Bowls. Then it was the over hitting in four of five — 2014 and 2015, then 2017 and 2018 — with the under in 2016 the only under mixed in. If we go back another year, the over hit in 2013 as well, so it was really five of six in that stretch.

Five of the last 10 Super Bowls had totals of 50-plus, and the over hit in two of those. Conversely, the under hit in two of the five Super Bowls that had totals in the 40s. The lowest total in that span was 43.5 (Broncos-Panthers 2016), and the under won. The highest total was 57 (Patriots-Falcons 2017), and the over hit — though that required overtime, as the total was 56 in regulation.

Comeback Super Bowl Winners

If you want to get in on some in-game bets for the Super Bowl, then looking at some of the come-from-behind winners may be of interest. There is not much data to go on in terms of live betting odds throughout Super Bowl history, but there have been six true comeback wins in Super Bowl history that could have paid off huge for live bettors.

Last year’s Super Bowl was the most recent example, with the Chiefs down 24-14 to the Eagles at halftime. They came back to win by 3.

The Tom Brady Patriots have two of the most infamous examples: Their 28-3 comeback on the Falcons and the win over the Seahawks that was sealed by Malcolm Butler’s interception at the goal line. New England trailed 24-14 at the end of the third quarter in that one.

Drew Brees led the Saints back against the Colts in 2010, going on a 31-7 run after getting down 10-0.

The last two examples are older games:

  • 1991: Giants beat the Bills by 1 after trailing 12-3 (aka the Scott Norwood Wide Right game)
  • 1988: Doug William led Washington to 42 straight points to beat John Elway’s Broncos 42-10.

Preseason Longshots to Win the Super Bowl

Super Bowl winners are rarely huge surprises relative to their standing when the season begins. That said, there have been some massive longshot winners in terms of either their preseason odds or their odds leading up to the postseason.

Some preseason longshots include:

  • 2017 Eagles: +4000 (Nick Foles season)
  • 2001 Patriots: +6000 (First Tom Brady Super Bowl)
  • 1999 Rams: +15000 (Kurt Warner replaces Trent Green)
  • 1981 49ers: +5000 (First Joe Montana Super Bowl)
  • 1980 Raiders: +3500 (Jim Plunkett replaces Dan Pastorini)

Then there have been a few longshots based on their late-season/playoff odds that went on to win it all:

  • 2012 Ravens: +3000 in Week 16 (Joe Flacco season)
  • 2011 Giants: +5000 in Week 14 (Second win over Patriots)
  • 2010 Packers: +2800 in Week 16 (Aaron Rodgers’ only win)
  • 2007 Giants: +5000 entering playoffs (Ended perfect Patriots run)
