EchoPark Automotive 400 Race Preview

The NASCAR Cup Series heads to a high-speed, smooth intermediate this weekend, which marks a big test for the new Ford and Toyota noses. Fords struggled on these circuits for most of last season outside of Ryan Blaney’s win at the Coke 600 and Chris Buescher’s win at Michigan, while Toyotas swept at Kansas and probably should’ve won at Texas.

Last year’s event at Texas, which came during the playoffs, saw Bubba Wallace (+1600) lead a race-high 111 laps from the pole before finishing in P3. William Byron (+700), who led only six laps in the 267-lap event, stole the win late. Behind Wallace, the next-best cars belonged to Kyle Larson (+400), who led 99 laps, and Tyler Reddick (+600), who led 36. Unsurprisingly, Larson and Reddick are the betting favorites for the AutoTrader EchoPark Automotive 400.

But this isn’t the first event on a high-speed, smooth intermediate this season — that honor belongs to Las Vegas. While Las Vegas isn’t a perfect comparator (it’s a tri-oval; Texas is a quad-oval), it’s a pretty good one, and we saw Larson dominate in the desert by leading 181 laps, followed closely by Reddick in P2 and Blaney in P3, giving each manufacturer a podium finish.

But when we look at green-flag speed ratings, another story reveals itself: Chevrolets (well, except for Larson) have seemingly fallen behind Toyotas and Fords. At Las Vegas, only two of the top 10 cars that completed at least a stage were Chevrolets: three were Fords and five were Toyotas. Texas features even faster average green-flag speeds than Vegas, so top speed will matter that much more here, and I’m skeptical of the Bowties’ ability to keep up.

Autotrader EchoPark Automotive 400 Bet #1: RFK Racing is LIVE! | NASCAR Cup Series

The RFK Racing Fords of Brad Keselowski and Chris Buescher are still hunting their first wins of the season after combining for (well, after Buescher single-handedly scoring) four wins over the last two seasons, including a victory at the similarly smooth and fast-paced Michigan International Speedway. Let’s hope that the speed these two showed on intermediates last year and the new Ford nose combine for an upset win for their team.

This weekend’s trip to Fort Worth offers both drivers a chance to mark one down in the win column. Last year, Buescher ranked fourth in green-flag speed here, just barely edging out sixth-ranked Keselowski. Buescher only scored a P14 result for his efforts, but Keselowski brought his No. 6 Ford home in P7. The RFK Racing duo qualified second and third, respectively.

We didn’t get the chance to see much from Keselowski or Buescher at Las Vegas, and again, it has limited value as a comparator. Buescher crashed out early after qualifying ninth (and recorded the best average green-flag speed rating due to his low numbers of laps completed) while Keselowski ranked 16th and finished P13. That said, neither RFK driver did much at Vegas last year before their strong runs at Michigan and Texas.

We’re betting on both Buescher and Keselowski to win this one outright and score top-10 results. Keselowski has the second-most starts of any driver here without a win, but he hasn’t finished outside the top-10 here in his last five starts. He owns two wins and nine top-3s at Texas in the Xfinity Series over 19 starts. Buescher is yet to get a top-10 here in Cup, but he should’ve had one last fall.

Autotrader EchoPark Automotive 400 Bet #2: Bubba Wallace Hours | NASCAR Cup Series

Yeah, I don’t get why the books are disrespecting Bubba Wallace this much. After dominating the last race at Texas, he clocks in at odds of +1600 at DraftKings to win this race, and you can find him at -125 on BetMGM just to score a top-10 result. We already know that 23XI (and Wallace) can dominate on smooth, high-speed intermediates — the team has won three of the last four races at Kansas with three different drivers (including Wallace).

Wallace’s record at smooth, high-speed ovals is genuinely impressive. In 2022, he won at Kansas in the fall after nearly winning at Michigan a few weeks earlier. He scored the second- and third- best driver ratings in those events, respectively. In 2023, Wallace scored top-5s at Kansas (spring), Charlotte and Texas. Importantly, he also recorded the best driver rating at Texas last year to go with the fifth-best average green-flag speed.
