Indiana (-4.5) vs. Kent State

The Kent State Golden Flashes are one of the best teams with a double-digit seed in this year’s tournament. They ran through the MAC this year with a 15-3 record in conference play and are on a six-game winning streak. The Golden Flashes kept most of last year’s squad intact and returned two all-conference guards in Sincere Carry and Malique Jacobs.

Kent State has already faced some tough competition. They played College of Charleston, Houston, Gonzaga and Northern Kentucky in the regular season, all of whom made the tournament. The Golden Flashes beat Northern Kentucky and kept the other three games within a single-digit margin. Gonzaga only beat them by seven points and Houston only beat them by five.

Because this Kent State squad has already lined up against tougher opponents than the Indiana Hoosiers this year — and because this team has been together for so long — the Golden Flashes won’t suffer from the stage fright that underdog programs sometimes do. That’s why the books have them at only a 4.5-point disadvantage.

Kent State has usually exceeded expectations under head coach Rob Senderoff. The Golden Flashes are 73-58-4 (55.7%) against the spread when listed as an underdog since he took over the program in 2011. The Golden Flashes have gone 4-1 against the spread as an underdog this year. Senderoff’s teams are also 1-0 against the spread in NCAA tournament play during his tenure.

Indiana has drawn a surprising amount of the action, likely because square bettors are surprised to see a major program listed as only a 4.5-point favorite over a mid-major program. But Pinnacle, a sharp book, has already cut Indiana’s advantage down to 4. Bettors can still buy the +4.5 at -110 via FanDuel Sportsbook.
