Collin Morikawa Collapse Makes PGA History, Lets Jon Rahm Steal Win at Sentry

Collin Morikawa made PGA Tour history on Sunday, but not in any way that he wanted to. The Collin Morikawa collapse at the Sentry Tournament of Champions allowed Jon Rahm to get a totally unexpected victory.

Morikawa entered the final round with a six-stroke lead that he pushed to seven before a string of bogeys allowed Rahm to storm back and win by two.

Morikawa was a -550 favorite to win the tournament entering the final round, and Rahm was +2000 to win (per DraftKings).

“I don’t know, it sucks,” Morikawa said, according to Yahoo Sports. “You work so hard and you give yourself these opportunities, and just bad timing on bad shots and it kind of added up really quickly. I don’t know what I’m going to learn from this week, but it just didn’t seem like it was that far off. … Yeah, it sucks.”

Rahm, the Sentry runner-up last year, was the +650 favorite to start the tournament, with Morikawa at +1800.

Morikawa did not bogey any of the first 67 holes in Hawaii before carding three straight. Rahm closed the gap with three straight birdies before an eagle on No. 15. He started the day seven strokes back, opened with a bogey, and was six back at No. 13.

“If you told me at the beginning of the round after that bogey I was going to do what I did and have a [two-shot] win, I wouldn’t believe you,” Rahm told the Golf Channel.

Morikawa became only the seventh golfer to not win a PGA Tour event after holding a six-shot lead entering a final round. According to the Golf Channel, the others were:

Dustin Johnson, 2017 WGC-HSBC Champions (closed in 77)

Spencer Levin, 2012 WM Phoenix Open (75)

Sergio Garcia, 2005 Wachovia Championship (72)

Greg Norman, 1996 Masters (78)

Hal Sutton, 1983 Anheuser-Busch Classic (77)

Gay Brewer, 1969 Danny Thomas-Diplomat Classic (73)

Bobby Cruickshank, 1928 Florida Open (80)

Morikawa shot an 8-under 65 on Saturday with birdies on four of his final five holes, and opened Sunday with three birdies in six holes before seven straight pars. He shot a final round 1-under 72, with Rahm carding a 10-under 63.

Morikawa has not won since the 2021 British Open.

“At this point now, hopefully it just pushes me more and more to really figure out what it’s going to take for 72 holes,” he said.
