Brock Purdy seems to be a go for tonight. Despite the shoulder soreness, Purdy will return to the 49ers lineup to help save their season. But that’s just it; San Francisco has been decimated by injury, and when it is relatively healthy, it isn’t that good — far from great like we saw last year until it fell short in the Super Bowl. With the snow, travel and barely healthy quarterback, it’s hard to trust the 49ers offense on the road.
The other side is far more appealing because of Buffalo’s quarterback. Despite this being an out-of-conference opponent, Buffalo is still just behind Kansas City for the top seed in the AFC. It’s a big game with the entire NFL world tuning in, so expect some sort of fireworks from Josh Allen.
The spotlight games are the ones where he shines the most. I expect him to move around, not just out of jams or escaping a collapsing pocket but also with designed runs and positive gains off the pass rush. Allen is a massive threat to this once-powerful 49ers defense that’s now more of a relic than anything to be feared. It gives up an absurd number of rushing touchdowns compared to the rest of the NFL and should be a willing dance partner with Allen.
Buffalo is not desperate at all but has to keep pace with Kansas City while dealing with Pittsburgh and Baltimore in the rearview. These games are important no matter how you slice it. Allen will step up and score — all on his own.
