This is a competitive divisional game, the second meeting between these teams this season, and I expect it to play out differently than the high-scoring affair we saw earlier.
Both have the ability to control tempo at times, but it’s the 49ers who really want to dictate the pace. Despite its 6-7 record and ongoing struggles, San Francisco’s underlying metrics are solid. Its defense is tough to pass against and stout against the run, though not impenetrable.
The Rams, on the other hand, aren’t particularly interested in running the ball, and that could pose challenges for them. Injuries are a factor here too. Nick Bosa is questionable and Trent Williams is out, while Christian McCaffrey remains sidelined. Despite these issues, the 49ers ended a three-game losing streak with a dominant win over the Bears last week.
The Rams won the first meeting between these teams 27-24, but it was a strange game. They rushed for around 4 yards per carry and had under 300 total yards of offense. So how did they pull it off? Efficiency. They went 3-for-3 on fourth down and the teams combined for 11 of 23 on third downs. Both offenses ran hot on points, but neither consistently marched down the field.
In that game, the 49ers showed more offensive promise, and they’re the team more likely to play slowly tonight. Meanwhile, the Rams’ recent rushing trends suggest they’re burning more clock, which aligns with my expectation for a slower-paced game.
To hit the over, both teams would need to be extremely efficient. And while that’s possible given the offensive talent on both sides, it’s far from a guarantee. If drives stall, if field goals replace touchdowns or if either team struggles to maintain rhythm, this game will stay under.
