Rams Pickup Matthew Stafford’s Option, Guarantee $62 Million Cap Number

The Los Angeles Rams will be retaining starting QB Matthew Stafford next season. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Saturday that, per league sources, the Rams will pay the remainder of Stafford’s 2023 bonus and pick-up his 2024 salary.

The move locks-in a $62 million guaranteed salary cap hit for the Rams next year. Had they decided not to pick up Stafford’s option, the Rams could cut Stafford and take a $13 million hit against the cap. The move will be officially carried out on the third day of the league year.

Questions were swirling last week about the status of Rams’ head coach Sean McVay. Those questions were put to rest when it become known that McVay would remain with the team in 2024.

McVay will do so with the starting quarterback that led the Rams to the Super Bowl a year ago.

Rams Look to Matthew Stafford, Kupp to Bounce Back

The Rams 2022-23 season was a disappointment coming off the high of winning Super Bowl LVI. After a middling 3-3 start to the season, the team came out of their Week 7 bye only to go 0-6 until finally defeating the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 14.

Stafford was hobbled by nagging injuries throughout that stretch. He eventually suffered a concussion in Week 11 against the New Orleans Saints and did return to the field this season.

News of the injury came one week after star WR Cooper Kupp went down with a sprained ankle. Veteran defensive leader Aaron Donald was lost to a high ankle spring in Week 12.

Stafford, Kupp and Donald were arguably the team’s three most important players from their Super Bowl run. They will look to put this year’s struggles past them as they prepare to bounce back next year.

Reporting on the return of McVay, Fox’s Jay Glazer reported that the Ram’s head coach emphasized his willingness to “not run from the adversity, but run through it.

He will get the opportunity in 2024 with Matthew Stafford back at the helm of the Rams’ offense.
