Sean Payton-Texans Rumors Heat Up Following Latest Comments

Former New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton is interested in hearing out the Houston Texans. During his Monday appearance Monday on “The Herd with Colin Cowherd”, Payton said he would “absolutely” consider the Texans opening.

Payton will meet with the Texans, Carolina Panthers and Denver Broncos this week. The Arizona Cardinals have also shown interest in the offensive-minded coach.

Whoever takes a chance on Payton will have to send the Saints compensation, as he’s still on contract even after stepping down from the position at the conclusion of last season.

“Ultimately, the compensation for the Saints would be a mid- or late-first-round pick,” Payton said, per ESPN. “Each team has different ammo or different pick selections. It could be a future one where maybe you have to throw in something.”

Sean Payton-Texans Betting Odds

DraftKings Sportsbook has released the betting odds for all teams looking for their next coach. According to the book, Sean Payton (+1200) is still a long shot to take the position in Houston. Eagles defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon (+220) is the current favorite.

There is some allure to the Texans’ job despite the public perception and betting odds. Payton would undoubtedly have a seat at the table for the NFL Draft, where the Texans have the No. 2 overall selection and will likely select their next quarterback.

Moreover, Payton has a solid relationship with Texans owner Cal McNair and general manager Nick Caserio from his days with the Saints.

“When you practice for three days with an opponent, you get a chance to meet a lot of the different personalities and people involved in the building,” Payton said. “They’ve got really good draft capital, really good draft capital. They’re in a division that you can at least say with Indy, Tennessee and Jacksonville [is winnable].

“There’s growth potential immediately there from their two or three wins they had this year.”

This upcoming week will prove vital for teams looking to land Sean Payton, as he is now eligible to meet in person.

“That’s the significance of the upcoming week or two, meeting some of these individuals, asking some questions, maybe some difficult questions,” Payton said. “And trying to get answers so we’re not having difficult questions when you’ve already taken the job.”
