2023 Women’s World Cup Bets: USWNT to be eliminated in the quarterfinals (+300, DraftKings)

We are getting right into it with the spicy takes. The USWNT will not complete the World Cup three-peat and they will be eliminated in the quarterfinals at the hands of Japan. I wanted to have patience with this team but their last match versus Portugal told me all I need to know about their final destination. Carli Lloyd hit the nail on the head with her former teammates, including the likes of Alex Morgan and Megan Rapinoe; the post saved them from elimination and it looked like they could not have cared less about their luck after the match.

On top of that, their offense has been brutal to watch at this World Cup. They have scored only four goals despite an xG of 7.7, meaning they have underperformed by an entire goal over the course of three matches. Meanwhile, on defense, they have hardly been tested, with a combined xGA of 0.7. Sweden, Japan, Spain and England, their most probable bracket route, will be much more ruthless in attack than the countries they faced in Group E. All in all, the players and manager are just not up for the task ahead.

With that being said, I am fine seeing them past Sweden. Despite winning all of their matches in Group G, I think it is fair to say Sweden had an easier group. Also in their last four meetings, Vlatko Andonovski’s side is 2-1-1 against the Swedes which is fair form. Japan on the other hand is too tough. They too, won all three games so far, without conceding a single goal. Moreover, Japan absolutely walloped Spain, who are one of the biggest favorites left in the field. At this moment in time, Japan would roll the States, and picking the USWNT to fall out in this round offers more value at +300.

2023 Women’s World Cup Golden Boot Odds (Lauren James!)

Lauren James +450
Jill Roord +1200

2023 Women’s World Cup Bets: Lauren James to be top goalscorer (+450, DraftKings)

After Alexandra Popp was eliminated with Germany, the Golden Boot race opened back up for the taking. Popp, who was our choice before the tournament, finished on four goals and still leads the pack. Nonetheless, the odds of her retaining this placement on the goal scoring charts is slim to none. Therefore, we thought it would be useful to adjust and make a bold bet on Lauren James to win the Golden Boot race.

The young English attacker has three goals at the tournament already, putting her in a great position for the award. First, the quality of the goals she has scorer has to be mentioned, some absolute bangers. She has scored those three goals on an incredibly modest five shots, giving her a goals per shot ratio of 0.6, the highest in England’s team. The Chelsea player was only expected to have 0.7 goals, which tells you all about the quality of her finishing. Against frugal defenses like Jamaica and Nigeria, her quality will be needed for England to light up the score board.

Additionally, England have a really great road in this bracket. The hardest team on their side is France, and they would not face them until the semifinals, which gives Lauren plenty of time to stack up the goals. At +450, she is the third most-highly touted player for this award.

2023 Women’s World Cup Odds (Semifinalists)

England -250
Spain -160
France -135
USA +110
Netherlands +140
Australia +170
Japan +200
Colombia +275
Sweden +350
Denmark +700

2023 Women’s World Cup Picks: Netherlands to be semifinalists (+140, DraftKings)

Our final bold bet for the knockout stages features the Netherlands to be semifinalists for the second World Cup in a row. The Dutch have +140 odds for this play, giving them an implied win probability of 41.6%.

So far, the Netherlands are still unbeaten at the World Cup, with two victories over Portugal and Vietnam and an impressive draw against the USWNT. More impressively, they have only conceded once at this tournament. Offensively, even with Vivianne Miedema, they are doing just fine, scoring nine goals on an xG of 7.9. Oranje leeuwinnen are a tough, physical side that will surely frustrate their knockout opponents.

First, they play South Africa, which is a really favorable match. Spain would be their next opponents, which is obviously a step up in terms of difficulty. Nonetheless, I have not been overly impressed with Spain. They seem to be more pre-occupied with off-pitch drama and entertainment, which was evident in the 4-0 thrashing to Japan. I think they are coming into this tournament a little too high and mighty, and the Netherlands are a team that can put them down.
