Women’s World Cup Best Bets: Switzerland-New Zealand and Germany-Colombia Predictions

On Sunday, the 2023 Women’s World Cup makes its turn into the final leg of the group stages. Four games will be featured, as Group H wraps up matchday two and Group A starts matchday three. Switzerland-New Zealand and Germany-Colombia are the most anticipated contests, and below we will provide the best Women’s World Cup bets for those matches.

To start, Group A is intriguing because it is the first time we have really had proper elimination football at this World Cup. Nobody has qualified from Group A yet, which makes it all the more exciting. On top of that, the best two teams in the group, Switzerland and New Zealand, have to play each other. Switzerland are atop the group on four points, which means a win or draw would see them through to the knockouts. Sadly, the tournament hosts are stuck on three points which means they can be surpassed by either the Philippines or Norway should they even draw.

Likewise, the two leaders in Group H also meet on Sunday. Germany and Colombia both sit on three points and are looking to set themselves up for knockout qualification. A win for either side would all but give them their ticket to advance. Nonetheless, Germany has South Korea on the final day, which means a result this Sunday is a little more important.

Switzerland-New Zealand Prediction

Switzerland are the favorites in this one with +105 moneyline odds and a corresponding implied win probability of 48.8%. In their last time out, they were outplayed by Norway in a 0-0 stalemate. This adds onto an already mediocre run of form, going 1-6-1 over their last eight in all competitions. In theory, New Zealand should be an easier game, but nothing can be assumed at the World Cup, especially on the final day of the group stage.

On a positive note, La Nati have held five clean sheets over that same span of game, including a run of three consecutive goose eggs. This can be significantly contributed to the performances of Gaelle Thallmann in between the sticks of goal. Her five saves against Norway is the only reason we do not have a three-way tie at the top of Group A.

This is not good news for New Zealand, who have failed to score in 79% of their last 14 matches. Moreover, against the Philippines they had 14 shots and an expected goal tally of 1.9. These are horrific records, and despite their home-field advantage, makes me very unconfident in their chances of an upset. Jacqui Hand and Hannah Wilkinson simply have to be better if they want to give New Zealand a fighting chance.

With that being said, I am going to ride the Switzerland clean sheet, which sits at a surprising +125. Betting the under does not offer significant value here, and we know this is a current trend for the Swiss. On top of that I will be brave and take the Swiss moneyline at +105 too. I think this will be a marginal victory for Inka Grings’ side, but a victory nonetheless.

Final Switzerland-New Zealand Prediction: Switzerland clean sheet (+125, DraftKings)

Switzerland moneyline (+105, DraftKings)

Germany-Colombia Prediction

Next, we take a look at Germany and Colombia who are respectively the 2nd and 25th best sides in the world. Currently, they also have -10,000 and +1,000 odds to qualify from Group H, with South Korea trailing behind at +800. Before I say anything about this match, let’s remember I picked Germany to win the entire tournament when they were at +650; I favor them to say the least.

Germany got their World Cup campaign off to a flying start, beating Morocco 6-0. Two own goals from Hanane Ait El Haj and Yasmin Mrabet aided their cause, but it was still exactly the kind of performance you want to see from a favorite on matchday one. Martina Voss-Tecklenburg’s side had three different goal scorers, but Alexandra Popp was the one who stood out on the day. The Golden Boot favorite bagged a brace in 82 minutes of play, on an xG of just 1.1. She has scored 11 goals in her last 15 games for Germany and is one Colombia will have to game plan for.

Additionally, Germany have now reached 20 consecutive matches unbeaten at the group stages. They are European royalty and should be favored with that same logic. On the other hand, Colombia also impressed with a 2-0 victory over South Korea. My concern with Colombia is their consistency, as they have gone 3-4-3 in their last ten. In their last two matches versus European opposition, they lost both, being outscored 7-3.

In this match, I like Germany -1.5 (-135) and Alexandra Popp to score (+105). Great teams cover and Germany is a great side. Likewise, Popp is my updated pick for the Golden Boot, after Sam Kerr’s injury, so I have to ride with her bagging another one.

Final Germany-Colombia Prediction: Germany -1.5 (-135, DraftKings)

Popp to score (+105, DraftKings)
