Best College Baseball Bet Today: Can BYU Stay Hot? (February 20)

It’s a relatively barren college baseball card tonight, but with alternative betting options few and far between, we’ll focus on this college baseball bet anyway. Two unranked squads, the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs and the BYU Cougars, will face off at 7 p.m. ET. The Cougars have won two of the three games in this series but are underdogs for the fourth contest. Although we have a small sample size to work with, BYU is the best college baseball bet today.

The BYU Cougars, fresh off a solid 33-21 season last year, have gotten out to a 2-1 start. They are playing a four-game road series at Louisiana Tech in Ruston, La., and will end the series tonight. The two teams played once on Friday, twice on Saturday and now wrap up the series.

The Cougars have beaten up the Bulldogs offensively. They have scored 24 runs across their first three games and at least six in every matchup. In contrast, the Bulldogs have scored just 11 runs, six of which came in the last two innings of Saturday afternoon’s game.

With both teams likely starting their fourth options at pitcher, scoring should come at a premium on Monday night. That should give the Cougars a leg up. BYU owns an impressive on-base percentage that ranks 71st through three games (0.419) while Louisiana Tech ranks a dismal 242nd (0.297).

The Bulldogs will bounce back at some point, but they lost some crucial pieces in the offseason, and the books might be overrating them as a result. Their best hitter, shortstop Taylor Young, departed for the minor leagues. He led the team in OPS (1.151) by a wide margin last year. The team’s third-best performer in the metric, Steele Netterville (0.945), also left. The duo combined for 32.4% of the team’s runs and 27.6% of the team’s hits in 2022.

BYU’s hot offensive start is unsustainable. Three players, third baseman Austin Deming, right fielder Ryan Sepede and second baseman Ozzie Pratt all have an OPS above 1.3 — bloated numbers that sit far above their production last season. But because BYU is out-hitting Louisiana Tech 41 to 19 this series, even some regression may not prevent them from winning.

The Cougars have shown enough life to warrant better odds than what they’re getting at DraftKings Sportsbook. Buy them on the moneyline at +130 (43.4%). Readers who are new to DraftKings can score $150 in bonus bets by winning a $5 moneyline wager!
