Best MLB Orioles-Cubs Betting Pick & Prediction: Back the Home Underdogs

Orioles-Cubs Odds
Odds via FanDuel Sportsbook
Orioles: -115 | Cubs: -105

The Baltimore Orioles are favored by the slimmest of margins to take the final game of this series. They’ll start RHP Dean Kremer (7-3), whose 4.74 ERA is solid but unsustainable, as his 6.11 xERA suggests. The Cubs will start struggling RHP Jameson Taillon (2-4), whose 6.70 ERA and 5.62 xERA are similarly poor. That said, Taillon is the more obvious fade to public bettors because of his record and ERA. Kremer just barely edges Taillon in FiveThirtyEight’s rolling game score as well.

These offenses are also closely matched. The Orioles rank a respectable 11th in weighted on-base average, or wOBA, at .324; they slot in 12th in expected weighted on-base average, or xwOBA, at .326. The Cubs rank 13th in wOBA at .321 and 10th in xwOBA at .327. Those numbers suggest little beyond Chicago’s offense likely getting slightly underrated relative to Baltimore’s. However, it’s worth noting that the Orioles list both Ryan Mountcastle and Cedric Mullins on the injury report. They are the second- and sixth-ranked Orioles by xwOBA, respectively.

Most markets for Sunday’s contest aren’t open as of publication, but I think there’s enough value on the moneyline to warrant a wager if you can get Chicago at odds of -110 (51.9%) or better. The Cubs have a real chance to sweep the Orioles on Sunday, in no small part because of Baltimore’s banged-up batters. The Cubs were available at -104 (50.9%) via FanDuel Sportsbook on the moneyline when this story went live. Chicago is 20-16 at home (55.6%) and 6-5 (54.6%) as a home underdog. New to FanDuel?
