Phillies-Padres MLB Pick & Prediction: Where’s the Betting Value? (September 5)

Yesterday San Diego lost its series opener against Philadelphia 9-7 to drop to a highly disappointing 65-74 overall on the year. Will the team bounce back on Tuesday night?

It’s about that time to examine the MLB odds and see where the value may be in OddsShopper’s Phillies-Padres MLB pick and prediction overview.

Best Phillies-Padres Odds, Pick & Prediction (September 5)

First Pitch: 9:40 p.m. ET
Venue: Petco Park (San Diego)
Probable Pitchers: Michael Lorenzen (PHI – RHP) at Pedro Avila (SD – RHP)

It’s not the prettiest of pitching matchups on Tuesday night, with Michael Lorenzen getting the start for the Phillies and Pedro Avila expected to open the game for the Padres.

The MLB odds board shows Philadelphia at -105 to win on the moneyline and San Diego at -115, while the total is trading at 9.0 runs per OddsShopper.

Philadelphia Phillies Overview and Odds

Lorenzen comes in with an 8-8 record and a 3.73 ERA on the year. He’s on his second team in 2023, having played 18 games the Tigers earlier in the season — and in five appearances for Philadelphia, three of which were starts, he’s allowed 30 hits and 17 runs (15 earned) and has a 20-to-11 strikeout-to-walk ratio across 32 innings.

The Phillies will be aiming for their third straight win as they try to keep a stranglehold of the NL Wild Card. They’re 76-61 on the year and currently have a 5.5-game cushion leading into Tuesday evening.

San Diego Padres Overview and Odds

Given the level of talent on the team and sky-high expectations heading into the season, it’s been a pretty rough 2023 for the Padres. They’re now nine games below .500 and 6.5 games back of a Wild Card spot.

Avila gets the starting call for San Diego on Tuesday night, though it’s unlikely he’ll see more than three or four innings of work. He’s been knocked around in his latest two outings, giving up 11 total hits and 11 runs (six earned) in losses to San Francisco and Milwaukee. It could be tough sledding again versus a Philadelphia team that’s 7-3 over its last 10 and rounding into form at the right time.

Phillies-Padres Best MLB Pick & Prediction

A closer look at all of the posted MLB player props and other team bets for both the Phillies and Padres shows rather barren results as far as MLB betting value goes.

OddsShopper likes the look of the over and is banking on more runs aplenty at Petco Park. There were four homers hit in yesterday’s opener, and with questionable pitching taking the mound in game two of the series, we could easily see similar fireworks on Tuesday. While the team as a whole has been a letdown, we know how much pop the Padres have throughout their order, and the same can be said for the Phillies.

It’s hard to put much faith in either pitching staff in this situation, so instead we’re targeting the over in hopes both teams will show up at the plate like they did on Labor Day.
