Best NBA Bets Today: Expert Picks, Predictions and Odds (January 9)

Time for a turnaround! Not a Kevin Durant hesi pull up jimbo, but this column is due for a bounce back. Last night’s 0-2 night is nothing to ignore, but that won’t last tonight with 10 teams in action. There are some decent plays for both sides and totals, but only one truly jumps out for each. The big news off the floor came with Ja Morant sidelined for the remainder of the year, so this is the Grizzlies’ first game since the news. Elsewhere, the awful Pistons host the Kings, and who knows, maybe LeBron James will tweet about his own son playing for the Lakers if they lose at home to the Raptors. Now let’s dive into the best NBA side and total bets today.

Best NBA Side Bet: Timberwolves-Magic

Everyone remains out for the Magic. Franz Wagner will miss another game, along with sidelined Wendell Carter Jr. The Magic frontcourt is depleted and now faces one of the tougher groups in Minnesota. Just being at home isn’t enough for the Magic, who are significantly outmatched. Orlando is getting 5 at home, and most people will jump on it because of the recent overtime victory against the Hawks, also coming with the same missing players. But the Hawks aren’t the Timberwolves and don’t present the same difficult frontcourt that Minnesota has in Karl-Anthony Towns and Rudy Gobert, not to mention Naz Reid off the bench.

Minnesota has the Celtics up next in Boston, so look at this as a tune-up rather than look-ahead. The West is a beast this year, with the Timberwolves barely holding on to the top spot; splitting an East Coast road trip is an easy way to keep pressure on the Nuggets, Thunder and Clippers. The trends will work against this play too. Orlando is a league-best 12-4 against at home, while the Timberwolves are down low in the league at 8-11 against the spread on the road. Circumstances mean everything, especially in the middle of the season. Expect injuries to catch up to Orlando and the Timberwolves to win.

Best NBA Total Bet: Kings-Pistons O/U 239.5

The Detroit Pistons are one of the worst teams in the NBA in both performance and record. Look no further than their recent stretch of games where they gave up just over 134 points per contest. Defense isn’t optional in Detroit, it’s a foreign term. The Kings are in desperate need of a convincing win, coming off a loss and dropping five of their last 10 overall. Despite some troubles, the Kings still come in putting up at least 135 points in two of their last three games. Clearly the Pistons are OK with giving up buckets, and the Kings have found some success in their faster tempo.

All six games in the NBA went over their totals last night as this scoring trend seems to only continue. There’s no more value in playing the unders with poor teams, as evident with the Wizards scoring 128 points last night. Sometimes it’s all about a change of scenery, and that doesn’t always mean returning home. The Kings split their four game homestand, but the biggest takeaway was how much they scored. Sacramento is just 5-11 to the over this year on the road, but none of those games were against a team unable to play defense. Take the over here.
