How the Trade Deadline Shifted NBA Championship Odds

Check out the latest NBA Championship odds below, per BetMGM:

The main takeaway when looking at the NBA championship odds following the trade deadline is that the Western Conference got a hell of a lot better. The Mavericks jumped from +2500 to +1600 after landing Irving and the Phoenix Suns went from +1900 all the way to +450 after landing Durant late Wednesday night.

The defending-champion Golden State Warriors have seen a stark drop-off after their trade deadline efforts. They went from +900 to win the championship earlier in the week to their current status (+1500), proving oddsmakers believe their path through the Western Conference just got a lot harder over the past two days. Golden State was able to land Gary Payton II on trade deadline day, also freeing up $7 million in luxury tax in the process.

Other teams with significant changes in their NBA championship odds include the Memphis Grizzlies, who went from +1100 to +1400. The Eastern Conference teams saw much less change to their odds. The Celtics remain the betting favorite, with the Philadelphia 76ers, Milwaukee Bucks, Cleveland Cavaliers and Miami Heat all seeing no change to their overall championship futures odds.

One glaring headscratcher is the Chicago Bulls' decision to stand pat at the trade deadline. Chicago (26-28) has underperformed mightily after they went all-in prior to last season. The core of Zach LaVine, DeMar DeRozan and Nikola Vucevic would have undoubtedly garnered some interest in the trade market. There was some buzz about a potential LaVine-Knicks deal, but no trade surfaced, and Chicago kept their roster intact. Their championship odds went from +20000 to +25000 since the start of the day despite the front office opting not to make a single move.

Based on the latest NBA championship odds, Thursday's trade deadline moves did little to push the envelope for any team, but perhaps some of the minor trades made will prove to be vital down the stretch and into the postseason.
