Brock Bowers Injury Update: Georgia Odds Shift After Injury

Brock Bowers Injury Update

The Bulldogs saw star tight end Brock Bowers suffer a high ankle sprain in his left leg on Saturday. Bowers has since opted for a tightrope surgery, which uses surgical thread instead of the previously standard metal screws to speed up the healing process. Estimates for recovery time for the operation range from four to six weeks, which likely means Bowers will miss most, if not all, of Georgia’s remaining regular-season games.

It’s worth noting that Bowers is expected to make a full recovery. Two other Georgia Bulldogs have underdone this exact procedure: right tackle Amarius Mims and tight end Lawson Luckie. Luckie underwent the procedure in mid-August and has since returned to the field, seeing action earlier this month against Kentucky. If Bowers follows Luckie’s exact timeline, he could be ready before the SEC Championship Game.

Losing your best player is never ideal, especially not at this point in the season. Still, the betting markets remain pretty high on the Georgia Bulldogs. Georgia is on a bye this week but will play a neutral-site game against Florida at the end of the month. Afterward, the Bulldogs will play at home against No. 20 Missouri and No. 13 Ole Miss before traveling to Knoxville for a game against No. 17 Tennessee. The Bulldogs end their regular season with game against Georgia Tech in Atlanta’s Bobby-Dodd Stadium.

Georgia was trading at +230 to win the college football championship as recently as three weeks ago. While their odds have lengthened somewhat since then, the movement isn’t damning. The implied odds on the over for their win total of 11.5 is just barely over even, so even though the books favor them to drop at least one game, their odds of going undefeated are still fairly high.

It’s worth wondering if the books are too high on a Bowers-less Georgia team. Quarterback Carson Beck has struggled this year — just not when targeting Bowers. This season, the star tight end leads the team in receptions (41), receiving yards (567) and receiving touchdowns (4). He has also run the ball six times for 28 yards and a score.

With Bowers sidelined, the Bulldogs are thin at tight end. Georgia already lost Darnell Washington to last year’s NFL draft, leaving them with Oscar Delp, who has 18 total receptions, 221 total receiving yards and three total receiving touchdowns since joining the team last year, and Lawson Luckie, a four-star true freshman who is yet to catch a pass.
