College Football Expert Picks for Week 7

Last week was nothing special, but this board sets up much better. We have several teams in tricky let-down or look-ahead spots, and that’s where I try to attack. Let’s break down the two matchups I’m betting first.

Alabama –3 at Missouri

I’m going right back to the Crimson Tide here. I’ve been backing Alabama since that Florida State loss, and this team keeps improving. Ty Simpson is playing efficient, mistake-free football, the defense is elite against the run, and they’ve been battle-tested week after week.

Missouri’s undefeated record looks good on paper, but look closer: They haven’t faced anyone close to Alabama’s level. Their defense metrics are inflated after games against UMass, Louisiana and South Carolina. The Tide’s front seven should control the line of scrimmage, and Simpson’s poise on the road gives me confidence this offense will keep rolling.

It’s a short number, and I’ll lay it.

Illinois +14.5 at Ohio State

This line feels a little rich. Ohio State’s defense is legit, no argument there, but their offense hasn’t been explosive enough to justify laying more than two touchdowns in conference play. Julian Sayin has been steady but not dynamic, and they’re leaning heavily on that defense to win low-scoring games.

Illinois isn’t flashy, but they’ve been reliable for bettors. Luke Altmyer is settling in, they’re moving the ball methodically, and Bret Bielema’s teams rarely beat themselves. If this turns into a grind (and I think it will) that +14.5 hook looms large.

I expect Illinois to keep it respectable into the fourth quarter, and that’s enough for me.
