Dolphins Quarterbacks Injury Update: Expect Clarity on Wednesday Heading Into Playoff Game Against Bills

The Miami Dolphins expect to get more clarity Wednesday on their quarterback situation for their AFC Wild Card playoff game at the Buffalo Bills on Sunday (1 p.m. ET). The Dolphins quarterbacks injury update includes insight into the status of Tua Tagovailoa, Teddy Bridgewater and Skylar Thompson as Miami prepares for the road game.

The Dolphins are 9.5-point underdogs against their AFC East rivals, per DraftKings, with their starting quarterback unknown.

“With all three active roster quarterbacks, they all have injury-related concerns,” Miami coach Mike McDaniel told the Dolphins website Monday. “I’m hoping to have some clarity on Wednesday. But as of right now, it’s literally the same, if not more vague, than when I just saw most of you guys last.”

Tua Tagovailoa, the Dolphins QB1, seems to be the furthest from playing as he is still not cleared for football activities from the NFL concussion protocol.

“When he’s medically cleared to practice, he’ll practice,” McDaniel said. “… He was [in] good spirits through the weekend, and there were no setbacks or concerns with regard to today. But he’s feeling good, and we’ll see what tomorrow brings.”

Thompson injured his left leg in the regular-season finale, an 11-6 win against the New York Jets. The rookie was playing in place of Bridgewater, who dislocated the pinky on his throwing hand the week before in a 23-21 loss to the New England Patriots.

“[We] had some bumps and bruises with Skylar as well,” McDaniel said. “I’m sure you caught him trying to pull out of a tackle. He was a little banged up from the game.

“I thought Teddy was good enough to get us out of the game, which was the whole goal, which was to his credit. He really worked, really, day and night endlessly, to be in a position where he could play for us if something happened to Skylar.

“So you kind of have to see the residuals of that and see where he’s at before making sound judgment on Wednesday. So I really don’t know. I’ll be preparing for everybody that we have. I don’t have any clarity. We’re hoping to have better clarity on Wednesday.”

The Dolphins were 7-1 in the first eight games Tagovailoa started this season, and he was injured and did not finish the one they lost (to the Cincinnati Bengals). But Miami was 0-4 in the last four games Tagovailoa started, and lost five in a row overall before defeating the Jets and qualifying for the playoffs as the No. 7 seed in the AFC.

Miami also is dealing with injuries to running back Raheem Mostert (thumb) and wide receiver Jaylen Waddle (ankle).

McDaniel said Mostert has “a serious injury.” Jeff Wilson Jr. would be the lead back if Mostert cannot play.

“It’s hard to know if he’ll be able to play this week,” McDaniel said. “I never put anything past Raheem Mostert, I’ve learned that over time. But it was a significant break of his thumb and he’ll be addressing that this week.”

The coach said he would be “very surprised” if Waddle was unable to play.

“But he will be going into treatment and working through that as the week progresses, for sure,” McDaniel said.

The Dolphins and Bills split their two games this season. Miami won 21-19 at home in Week 3, and Buffalo won 32-29 at home in Week 15, with Tua Tagovailoa starting each.
