Jalen Hurts Injury Ready for ‘Bounty’ When Eagles Face Giants in NFC Divisional Playoffs

Jalen Hurts said he is prepared if the New York Giants take aim at his injured shoulder when the Philadelphia Eagles host them in their NFC Divisional Round playoff game on Saturday night. The latest Jalen Hurts injury news came from the quarterback himself as he prepares for the third Eagles-Giants game of the 2022 NFL season.

“It’s football. I’ve got a bounty on me every week I go out there on the field,” Hurts told the Eagles website Tuesday. “So I’m going to go out there and just play my game, and whatever happens, happens.”

Philadelphia is down to a 7.5-point home favorite after opening at 8.5 points, even though Hurts is not on the initial injury report for the week.

Hurts sprained his right shoulder Dec. 18 against the Chicago Bears. He missed two games before returning to play the regular-season finale against the Giants, a 22-16 win as a 16-point favorite in a game when New York rested several key players, including quarterback Daniel Jones and running back Saquon Barkley.

“We know we’re playing a really good team, they have a really good defense, and they do a lot of really good things, that’s on both sides of the ball,” Hurts said. “We know we have to come prepared, put in a great week of preparation to go out there and play well Saturday.”

Jalen Hurts ran the ball nine times in that final game, but gained only 13 yards, a 1.4 per carry average that was his lowest of the season. ESPN reported that the Eagles used fewer designed runs for Hurts because of the injury.

“He’s efficient, and his ability to run the ball, to scramble, opens up a lot of things for their offense, the pass game,” New York safety Julian Love told the Giants website. “For the running back, it opens up holes for him. That’s how they get going, and they’re doing it at a very high rate right now. So, it’s a problem. That’s no secret to anybody. It’s a problem because of who’s at quarterback for them.”

The Eagles were 14-1 with Hurts at quarterback this season, including a 48-22 win as 7-point favorites at New York in NFL Week 14. He averaged 246.7 yards passing on 20.4 completions and 30.7 attempts per game, and 11.0 carries for 50.7 rushing yards per game. His 13 rushing touchdowns were tied for second in the NFL (Josh Jacobs, Las Vegas Raiders, 17) and five more than any quarterback (Justin Fields, Chicago Bears).

The Stokastic Player Projections for the NFL Divisional Round put Hurts at 243.2 passing yards and 55.6 rushing yards. Early player prop betting totals at FanDuel have his over/under at 235.5 passing yards and 51.5 rushing yards.

Hurts has gone over that rushing total nine times this season, including in Week 14 against the Giants (77 yards) and when he was injured against the Bears in Week 15 (61 yards). He has gone over the passing total eight times.

It will be the second NFL playoff game, the first at home, for Hurts. He and the Eagles lost 31-15 at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last season in the NFC Wild Card Round, a game they trailed 31-0 entering the fourth quarter.

“There was a ton that I learned from and I took away from that going into the offseason,” Hurts said. “I think it’s helpful for us to have experienced that together as a team and to have a lot of guys back.”
