2022 CJ Cup Sleeper Picks: Long Hitters Like Keith Mitchell Are the Guys to Bet in South Carolina

Welcome to the CJ Cup in South Carolina. The tournament most familiar to South Korea is still on the move, be it COVID or travel related. Swing season has seen some interesting names come across the leaderboard, especially with some non-cut events like this one at Congaree. The field continues to get heavier at the top, as Scottie Scheffler returns to stroke play and is joined by names like Justin Thomas and Matt Fitzpatrick. Others like Colin Morikawa and Cam Young make strong mid-range plays, but there is still tremendous value moving deeper down the board.

Below we’re looking at the best 2022 CJ Cup longshot golf bets for the week and trying to be the ones posting the HUGE PAYOUT screenshots on Twitter.

2022 CJ Cup Longshot Golf Bets

Outright Winner Longshot Bet

The biggest metric to target this week is getting off the tee, both accurately and for distance. Congaree is a long track, and there is little course history to rely upon, outside of the 2021 Palmetto Championship. Length is so key because tee shots don’t require as much tactical approach as other courses, allowing for some bigger risks with the driver. Long irons are also important to either overcome any mistake off the tee, or simply shorten longer par 4’s and the par 5’s. It might only be a 0.2 difference, but nobody on tour is outdriving Keith Mitchell. Despite his narrow lead over Cantlay, the 80-1 long shot comes into this event with the ability to absolutely smoke the ball from distance. He ranks first in driving distance through four rounds and is third in driving accuracy.

The main benefit from getting off the tee in a long and accurate fashion is the need to take less risk with iron shots, ultimately putting himself in a scoring chance with any approach. Putting is always going to be the most difficult variable to control, so getting to the green with less pressure on approach shots 140 or in is gigantic. It’s enough to separate him from weaker hitters who rely on tighter windows with their longer irons. At 80-1, it’s certainly worth a shot tailing a golfer who fits well at this course.

Outright Honorable Mention

This is a good time to remind everyone that honorable mentions are also great ladder plays, like last week with Keita Nakajima. The same approach works here with another non-cut event opens the door for a golfer toeing the line between long shot and mid-range, but certainly has value with a top-heavy field.

It’s not often that myself and Ben Rasa agree on anything in Putting for Dough, but we both came to the show prepared to defend Aaron Wise, especially at 50-1. Wise has been a crowd favorite and had a stretch of unbelievable golf last season. Putting will always be the concern surrounding any wager behind Wise, but he hits the ball as long as anyone in the field, from off the tee to longer irons. Wise is also a golfer to bet on when it comes to approach shots setting up scoring opportunities, something that should fit well at this course.
