Venus Williams Upset Moves Tennis Odds for Birmingham, Wimbledon Unchanged

Camila Giorgi entered Monday as one of the favorites to win the Birmingham Open. That changed quickly when she ran into Venus Williams early in the tournament. The two had a hard fought match with Williams coming out the victor.

Venus Williams took the first set from Giorgi in a 7-6 tiebreaker. Giorgi sneaked by with a 6-4 win in the second set. The third set is where things got even more interesting. Venus Williams got up two breaks and looked like she could coast the upset victory before Giorgi turned things around. The Italian once again sent things to a tiebreak, where she ultimately succumbed to Williams.

The win was huge for Williams who is recovering from a hamstring injury that held her out for most of this season. She dropped her last match a week ago to Swiss 17-year old Celine Naef. The victory over Giorgi could signal a shift in momentum for Williams.

Tennis odds have already shifted for the Birmingham Open. According to DraftKings, Williams remains a longshot to win at +2500, but she has moved past several other players to take down the WTA event. She sits just below Harriet Dart (+2200) and Linda Fruhirtova (+2000). The latter pulled off a huge upset of her own, taking down Elina Svitolina 6-2, 6-0. The favorites to win the tournament are Jelena Ostapenko (+400) and Barbora Krejcikova (+400).

The upset victory for Williams has yet to cause shifts in the Wimbledon Tennis odds, but those could move if she continues to play well. She is not currently listed on Wimbledon futures markets on DraftKings. The aforementioned Fruhirtova is +6500 to win Wimbledon, which indicates where Williams could be priced if she plays at Wimbledon. Williams has won Wimbledon five times in her career.
