2023 AL Cy Young Odds: Reason to Worry About Latest Jacob deGrom Injury?

Jacob deGrom finds himself in an all-too-familiar spot with the MLB regular season right around the corner. The decorated right-hander will begin his first Spring Training with the Texas Rangers by having his throwing regimen pushed back due to a “right side” issue. Rangers general manager Chris Young downplayed the severity of the Jacob deGrom injury when meeting with the media Thursday.

“It’s as much about Day One of spring training as anything,” Young said Wednesday morning. “We’re more about planning for March 30. It’s cold and wet and we’re going to have to alter some of what we do anyway. He’s six bullpens in. He’s competitive and wants to be out there. This probably says more about me than it does him.”

2023 AL Cy Young Odds: Does the Jacob deGrom Injury Change Things

The latest Jacob deGrom hiccup may seem like no big deal on the surface. But when you take into account that deGrom has been limited to 38 starts over the past three years due to a couple of different injuries, it isn’t wholly ridiculous that some Rangers fans may be quick to push that panic button on their new ace. Still, the Jacob deGrom 2023 Cy Young odds remain unchanged, and he is the favorite with Opening Day still a ways away.

Per DraftKings:

deGrom, a 34-year-year-old, remains one of the most dominant arms in the MLB when healthy. He finished with a 3.08 ERA in just 64.1 innings in 2022. It marked the first season he was over a 2.50 ERA since 2017 when he still managed to win 15 games and finish eighth in NL Cy Young voting.

He won two straight Cy Young Awards with the Mets in 2018 and 2019, leading the league with an incredible 1.70 ERA in 2018. deGrom led the NL in strikeouts in 2019 (2,055) and during the COVID-shortened 2020 season (104) before a plethora of injuries took over.

The Rangers invested a lot of money into keeping deGrom healthy and at the top of his game. The 2023 Cy Young odds would indicate they shouldn't worry about the latest injury too much. But the organization will certainly hope Wednesday's news is not a sign of things to come.
