MLB Futures Odds: Gerrit Cole Tops List of Veterans to be Baseball’s Wins Leader

Wins are harder to come by in Major League Baseball. Starting pitchers are throwing fewer innings and teams tightly monitor their pitch counts. The MLB Futures odds for the 2023 MLB wins leader are reflecting this trend. The odds board is topped by veterans who are likely to pitch much deeper into games to earn the win. Let’s take a look at the MLB futures odds for wins leader in 2023.

MLB Futures Odds: Gerrit Cole Tops List of Veterans

Per DraftKings,

Gerrit Cole +1000
Justin Verlander +1400
Max Fried +1500
Julio Urias +1500
Shane McClanahan +1500
Framber Valdez +1600
Carlos Rodon +1600
Shane Bieber +1600
Max Scherzer +1600
Sandy Alcantara +1600

With Opening Day approaching in less than a week DraftKings Sportsbook has released MLB futures odds for the season’s wins leader, as well as several other categories. Kyle Wright of the Atlanta Braves was the 2022 leader with 21 wins on the year. However, sportsbooks expect that to change, with a host of recognizable names at the top of the list.

Gerrit Cole tops the odds by a significant portion. Cole (+1000) had thirteen wins in 2022, which tied for 20th in the MLB. He garnered those thirteen victories across 200 plus innings pitched, and his status as the #1 starter for the New York Yankees who are expected to have one of the stronger overall record is what earns him the top spot on the MLB futures odds board.

Fellow New York star– albeit for the Mets– Justin Verlander is behind Cole at +1400. Verlander was second in wins in Major League Baseball last year. He posted 18 on the campaign, coming in below Kyle Wright for the wins leader crown. Verlander is joining the New York Mets as a free agent after spending his last five seasons with the Houston Astros.

Max Scherzer (+1600) will be welcoming Verlander to the Mets. Scherzer is in the top ten on the odds board despite having the lowest win total in 2022 of any pitcher in the top ten. He loggest just eleven wins a year ago, but could bounce back this year with the offensive additions made to the Mets lineup which is expected to contend for a world series.

Rounding out the top ten is Sandy Alcantara (+1600) who was last year’s NL Cy Young Award winner. Alcantara took down the prize with just fourteen wins. That number could increase if he maintains his success on the mound. The Florida Marlins have added several bats to support Alcantara this year.
