Nick Martinez Fantasy Baseball Projections: Is the Veteran a Solid Play vs. the Rockies? (March 31)

San Diego Padres right-hander Nick Martinez will be heavily relied upon to begin the season given the injuries and lack of depth in the team’s rotation. He will have his first opportunity to make a statement on Friday night against the Colorado Rockies. Although the Rockies got the better of San Diego on Opening Day, the Nick Martinez fantasy baseball projections show he could have a favorable matchup.

Nick Martinez Fantasy Baseball Projections: Go With The Padres Starter Friday?

Per Stokastic’s DFS projections, Nick Marinez (rostered in just 17.1% of ESPN leagues) projects to have 15.85 fantasy points on Friday night. Given the light five-game MLB slate, he could have some value for owners looking for a potential roster move.

Martinez finished the 2022 MLB season 4-4 with a 3.47 ERA. Operating mostly as a swingman in the Padres rotation, Martinez started just 10 games on the year but looks forward to the opportunity to prove he can be a starter going forward.

“The opportunity’s there, right? Now I’ve got to do my part. Obviously, as someone who’s bet on himself for basically his whole career, I’m cool doing that and I’m excited to do that and show them that I can do that,” Martinez said when asked by The Athletic about opening the season in the starting rotation.

Martinez was a member of Team USA in the World Baseball Classic but left the team a couple of games before the championship against Japan because he was not guaranteed a start. Martinez possesses plenty of swing-and-miss stuff, which was evident when he fanned eight in his final Spring Training tuneup.

The Rockies may have gotten off to a hot start Thursday, but they do not have a potent lineup on paper. After winning just 68 games in 2022, Colorado upset the fan base with a quiet off-season. They ranked middle-of-the-pack last season by scoring just a tad over 4.0 runs per game last season, but have the clear advantage of playing half of their games at the hitter-friendly Coors Field.

The Padres should be able to put together a much better performance on Friday night than they did on Opening Day, and you can expect the Rockies’ offense to come back down to earth.

The Nick Martinez fantasy baseball projections show he has some value in this spot.
