NIT Odds: Utah Valley Favored Over Cincinnati

Cincinnati enters as the underdog after beating Virginia Tech. The Bearcats then needed overtime to take care of Hofstra, winning 96-88 to advance to the NIT’s round of eight. Cincinnati had a 23-12 overall record this season and went 11-7 in the American Athletic Conference. Their record was good for fourth in the conference, but it was not strong enough to earn an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. Only the Houston Cougars and Memphis Tigers made it from the AAC.

Utah Valley defeated New Mexico and Colorado to reach the NIT quarterfinals. Their 27-8 overall record earned them first place in the Western Athletic Conference. They posted a 15-3 record in conference play. The Wolverines were defeated in the semifinals of the WAC tournament before they could reach the finals. The selection committee didn’t deem their resume strong enough to earn an at-large bid. They will now try to prove that their regular season WAC championship was well deserved.

The Wolverine’s have not disappointed in the NIT even though they were expecting bigger things heading into their conference tournament. Head coach Mark Madsen expressed his confidence in the team and the excitement surrounding them, adding that he is pleased they kept their head’s up after not making the field of sixty four. He explained to Daily Herald reporters out of Provo that.

“After our our quarterfinal loss in Vegas, it was tough,” Madsen said. “I think everybody needed some time so we actually just gave the guys two full days off. It was about getting away from everything and re-energizing. And the guys did that.”
