Boise State vs. New Mexico Odds, Picks: Broncos Favored Despite Quarterback Questions in Week 2 (September 9)

Just because these aren’t two highly-ranked teams in the FBS doesn’t mean there isn’t betting value to be had on Boise State vs. New Mexico.

New Mexico heads into this game 1-0, while Boise State is 0-1.

There could be a change at quarterback brewing for Boise State, but we’ll have to wait and see.

Below is our betting prediction for Boise State vs. New Mexico in Week 2.

New Mexico is 1-0, But…

If there’s one thing to learn about college football, it’s that not all 1-0 records are created equally. For the Lobos, they’re 1-0, but it’s off the back of a 41-0 win over the Maine Black Bears.

Even in that 41-0 win, Miles Kendrick had a concerning overall quarterback play. He notched two touchdowns on 170 yards passing (14 of 17), but he also threw two interceptions.

Also, his average depth of target was just 4.2 yards, so he wasn’t exactly slinging it around the yard. Remember, Kendrick used to play for Kansas. Sure, Kansas is not a great football team, but he had Big 12 experience.

This was simply a far superior college team taking on another. That won’t be the case against a fellow Mountain West Conference club in Boise State.

A Change at Quarterback for Boise State?

While we expect Boise State to win this game, the question becomes “by how much?”

Yes, Boise State is 0-1, but it did come against a Pac-12 team in Oregon State. Nonetheless, the Broncos and head coach Andy Avalos had no issue pulling fourth-year quarterback Hank Bachmeier after just eight pass attempts.

To be fair, Bachmeier was dreadful in those eight attempts, completing just six of those passes. However, two of those completions were to the other team.

The team then brought in redshirt freshman Taylen Green who may not have been the most stellar passer in the world, but added 11 carries for 102 yards and two scores, giving this offense some much-needed life.

If Green could do that against Oregon State, he’d be able to do far more damage against New Mexico, assuming he starts.

Boise State vs. New Mexico Prediction

If Boise State turns back to Bachmeier, this could change our opinion, but pulling a senior after just eight pass attempts doesn’t instill a lot of confidence in him starting moving forward.

With Green under center utilizing his legs and running back George Holani and Ashton Jeanty, the Broncos should be able to rebound in a big way in Week 2 with a redshirt freshman out to prove he should be the team’s starter.

Best NCAAF Bet: Boise State -17 (-110)
