49ers-Cowboys Weather Report: Will Rain Ever Stop in the Bay Area?

After a month of incredible rainfall, it looks like the San Francisco 49ers and Dallas Cowboys will have clear skies and ideal conditions for their NFC Divisional Round NFL Playoff game Sunday. The early 49ers-Cowboys weather report calls for rain, but only much later than the 3:30 p.m. PT kickoff.

49ers-Cowboys Weather Report

Per the Weather Channel, the forecast for Santa Clara, California on Sunday afternoon calls for a mix of sun and clouds, a high near 60, and winds of 5-10 mph. There will be a period of showers after midnight.

That is in stark contrast to earlier this month, when atmospheric rivers wreaked havoc in Northern California. According to The Mercury News, 17 inches of rain fell in downtown San Francisco from Dec. 26 to Jan. 15, “more than five times the city’s historical average of 3.1 inches over the same time.”

The area around Levi’s Stadium, about 45 miles south of San Francisco, received about 10-15 inches of rain during that time. President Joe Biden is expected to visit Santa Clara County on Thursday.

Bettors may be skeptical of the weather report this time around. This time last week, forecasts for the Seattle Seahawks at San Francisco 49ers game on Saturday showed a near-certain chance of heavy rain, but the sun broke through before halftime and 64 points were scored in the 41-23 San Francisco victory.

San Francisco is up to a 4-point favorite over Dallas, with a game total as high as 46, using the OddsShopper tools for the best NFL lines.

The Cowboys defeated the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 31-14 on Monday night in the NFC Wild Card Round, leaving them just five days to prepare for this road game. The Cowboys were 2-0 this season facing that time frame, and coach Mike McCarthy is 5-1 in his past six games in those conditions.

“The benefit for us, really, is if you look at our regular-season schedule,” McCarthy told the Cowboys website. “I don’t know if there’s a [variation] of the schedule that we didn’t work on. We’ve had an eight-day week, a six-day week, a seven-day week. We’ve played [on] Thursday Night Football, Sunday Night Football, Monday Night Football, Saturday afternoon football. So I think all of those experiences [will help].”

Though there was a flood watch in effect for the area as recently as Monday, the rest of the month is forecast to be rain-free.

“It’s going to help us dry out and dig out heading into late January,” climate scientist Daniel Swain told The Mercury News. “It’s really good news because it takes off the trajectory toward worsening flooding.”
