Betting Odds Suggest Jets Super Bowl Possible With Aaron Rodgers

The offseason dominos are starting to fall. Now that Derek Carr has landed with the New Orleans Saints, the shortlist of Aaron Rodgers landing spots has shrunk. On Tuesday, news broke that the Green Bay Packers have entered talks with the New York Jets for the star quarterback — and the Jets’ betting odds have begun to shift accordingly. The Jets, who opened at 28-1 to win next year’s Super Bowl, now sit at 25-1 on DraftKings Sportsbook.

New York Jets Betting Odds Shift After Aaron Rodgers News

The New York Jets made their intention to move on from Zach Wilson late last season. Benching the second-year quarterback once may have left a door open for his return, but benching him twice slammed it shut. As a result, NFL bettors have viewed the Jets as in the market for a new quarterback through most of the offseason.

New York’s decision to sign Nathaniel Hackett, formerly Rodgers’ offensive coordinator in Green Bay, indicated that the franchise had some interest in the veteran signal-caller. Losing the Derek Carr sweepstakes to New Orleans limited their options, and as of early Tuesday, the Jets sat at -125 to land Rodgers at DraftKings. That market came off the board late Tuesday morning.

While this year’s rookie class has four quarterbacks that analysts project to go in the first round, none of them may remain on the board by the time the Jets pick. New York will pick 13th overall in this year’s NFL Draft, behind quarterback-needy teams like the Houston Texans, Indianapolis Colts and Carolina Panthers. The Tennessee Titans and Atlanta Falcons may also have an interest in drafting a quarterback.

The Jets played exceptional football last year, especially on defense, and adding Rodgers to their roster would make them a legitimate contender in the AFC. New York’s defense ended the year ranked fifth in defense-adjusted value over average (DVOA). Of the top-seven teams in that metric, only the Jets and New England Patriots failed to make the playoffs. Those five teams currently own shorter betting odds than the Jets to win the Super Bowl next year — but only slightly. The Baltimore Ravens (22-1) are just a smidge ahead.

New York won’t need to bring in new playmakers to surround Rodgers, but the team will probably have to bolster its offensive line. The Rodgers already have some electric wide receivers in Garrett Wilson, Elijah Moore and Corey Davis. Running back Breece Hall provides some fire in the backfield. But offensive tackles Mekhi Becton and Duane Brown probably aren’t long-term solutions in the trenches, and the Jets will have to add some extra depth to get the most out of Rodgers.

The Aaron Rodgers news has vaulted the Jets from 28-1 to 25-1 to win next year’s Super Bowl at DraftKings Sportsbook. The Jets now own the ninth-shortest odds overall and the sixth-shortest odds in the AFC. The news has also pushed Buffalo to +100 to win the AFC East. The Jets are trading at +310.
