Chris Jones is quite a long shot to win Super Bowl MVP or to score a touchdown, but if the Kansas City Chiefs pull off an upset win due primarily to splash plays by their defense, he could enter the conversation. I don’t see that scenario as especially likely, as only three defensive linemen have ever won the award (and two of them were named co-MVPs), but it’s not like anyone saw linebacker Malcolm Smith’s win coming in 2014, either.

But while Jones probably won’t win MVP or score a touchdown, he should still contribute plenty as a defender despite his quiet stretch of recent games. Jones has tallied only four total assists and tackles this postseason, but he averaged 1.9 per game in the regular season. His half-sack against Miami remains his only one of the postseason, but he averaged 0.7 per game in the regular season, too.

Chris Jones Player Prop Pick for Super Bowl 58

Although Jones didn’t rack up impressive counting stats in the regular season — and while he has remained relatively quiet in the postseason — Super Bowl 58 is a big spot for him. Jones still tallied dominant numbers in advanced metrics, notching an 84.1 PFF grade to go with the league’s second-highest pass-rush win rate of all interior linemen (20%), behind only Aaron Donald. But because Jones faced double teams on a monstrous 72% of his snaps — higher than what Donald (63%), Jalen Carter (59%) and Quinnen Williams all faced (70%), we didn’t see that much of him in the box score.

The 49ers have one great offensive lineman, left tackle Trent Williams, but they don’t have a great offensive line. Williams led all tackles in pass-block win rate (96%). Only one other member of San Francisco’s roster, right guard Jon Feliciano, earned a ranking in the metric, finishing 18th among interior linemen (94%). Center Jake Brendel and left tackle Aaron Banks scored ghastly PFF grades of 63.9 and 54.9, respectively, well below their veteran teammates Williams (89.7) and Feliciano (81.2). San Francisco finished the season 20th overall in pass-block win rate (56%).

So can we expect Jones to make some noise in Super Bowl 58? I think a half-sack is well within his range of outcomes. For odds of +132 at FanDuel (whose house rules state that half-sacks satisfy the “Yes” on this market), we’re getting quite the deal. San Francisco’s offensive line allowed Brock Purdy to take one sack in the Divisional round, which was split by defensive tackle Kenny Clark and linebacker Preston Smith, as well as two sacks in the NFC Championship Game, one of which was split by defensive tackle Tyson Alualu and safety Ifeatu Melifonwu; the other recorded by defensive tackle Alim McNeill.
