The Chicago Bears may get a boost in the backfield with the return of David Montgomery to the running back position along with Khalil Herbert.
Montgomery had been out since Week 3 after suffering injuries to his ankle and knee but was able to make his return to the practice field for the Bears this past Thursday.
“He’s looked good,” coach Matt Eberflus said Friday to ESPN. “It’s positive, it’s real positive, and he’s looked good and is moving around well and has a good spirit about him. He has brightness in his eyes. I think he’s excited about getting going.”
The Bears travel to Minnesota to take on their NFC North rival Vikings as 7.5-point underdogs.

In Montgomery’s absence, the Bears have gotten a lot of production out of backup running back Khalil Herbert.
The second-year pro has carried the ball 29 times for 234 yards, good for a 6.0 YPC average. He’s scored two touchdowns, adding 36 yards in the passing game.
“You look at last year what he did: four games in a row, led the NFC in rushing,” head coach Matt Eberflus said of Herbert to ESPN. “He’s done it. He’s a good player. I think he’s an exciting guy to watch.”
Despite the stong performances from Herbert, we’re fully expecting Montgomery to take back his role as the main running back option for the Bears. Per our Stokastic NFL Start/Sit Fantasy Football Rankings, we have Montgomery listed as the No. 23 running back for Week 5, with Herbert checking in at No. 43.
While Herbert will likely still be an integral part of the Bears’ game plan against the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday and moving forward, Montgomery is the clear better option for fantasy football, and is expected to be given the bulk of the goal line carries for the Bears.
