2023 Genesis Invitational One and Done Picks: Is it Time to Buy Will Zalatoris?

The PGA Tour is back to California for the Genesis Invitational. It is a loaded field, but the big news is that Tiger Woods is also set to get his season started. Although he isn’t relevant to One and Done, it adds more intrigue to this event. With another $3 million-plus up for grabs for the winner, it’s a key early-season spot for One and Done pools. Let’s dive into the potential One and Done targets for the Genesis Invitational this week.

Genesis Invitational One and Done Targets

Safe Pick: Justin Thomas

Thomas was the One and Done pick last week and finished fourth for nearly $1 million. He’s almost certainly available in most pools and comes in with some momentum. Last week was a tee-to-green clinic, and if Thomas’ putter had heated up, he could have ended holding the trophy. He has experience and success at Riviera and checks almost all the boxes.

Scottie Scheffler was a safe target last week, and he returned $3.6 million for the effort. Don’t be shocked if Thomas replicates that and takes down this event.

Contrarian Pick: Will Zalatoris

Zalatoris is around 40-1 in the outright market, but there is no doubt he is a volatile option this week. He has not played much in 2023, and the results have been a mixed bag. There are the back issues that seem ongoing, and that’s a scary proposition for a One and Done selection. It’s not all bad, as he has insane talent and has proven it among the best fields on tour. He has multiple runner-ups at majors and a ball-striking game that suits Genesis, which make him an intriguing risk/reward play at what could be lower ownership.

Ben Rasa’s One and Done Pick: Xander Schauffele

Getting almost a million from Thomas last week was key to moving up to the middle of the pack. Sticking with that blueprint, Schauffele is coming off a quality 10th-place finish last week. Like Thomas, his ball striking was on point, and Schauffele has a perfect game to handle the difficult test Riviera provides. Many people want to save him for majors, and although that is a fair strategy, there are other guys in reserve for those spots. Schauffele has been fantastic at this event, having made the cut every time and never finishing worse than 23rd. He should get into contention this week and provide a nice payday in One and Done pools.
