Matthew Fitzpatrick Plays Spoiler to Jordan Spieth Bettors With RBC Heritage Win

The Jordan Spieth bets came flying in ahead of and during the RBC Heritage this weekend. And for a while, it looked like the wave of public bettors backing Spieth were going to be rewarded with a huge win. But Matthew Fitzpatrick did not get the memo, defeating the popular star in the third playoff hole of the tournament. Bettors were reeling after Fitzpatrick outlasted Spieth.

Matthew Fitzpatrick Spoils RBC Heritage For Jordan Spieth Bettors

Jordan Spieth (+2000 before the tournament at BetMGM2%) was the most-bet player coming into the RBC Heritage in both ticket percentage (8.2%) and handle percentage (11.7%). His popularity grew even more as he played his way to the top of the leaderboard throughout the weekend. Spieth was +550 entering Sunday’s final round and was a liability for the sportsbook.

It certainly looked like Spieth was going to win his second consecutive RBC Heritage title for most of the afternoon. He cruised to a two-shot lead at one point, but Fitzpatrick never folded, mounting the comeback before winning in thrilling fashion. Spieth had two putts inside 10 feet to win the tournament in the playoff but missed both by a matter of inches.

“I don’t know how the one on the first playoff hole didn’t go in,” Spieth said of his first potential winning putt, per Yahoo Sports. “I think if I hit the same putt 10 times, it goes in eight times. It should go left at the very end there on the grain. It just wasn’t meant to be.”

This left the door open for Fitzpatrick to make some magic on the third playoff hole and he did just that. After both players found the fairway with their drives, Fitzpatrick stuffed an approach shot to within five feet. Spieth left himself a putt of over 20 feet and would go on to miss it.

Fitzpatrick would tap his in, giving him his second career win on tour, and first since winning the U.S. Open last season.

The good news for Spieth is that his game appears to be back in elite form after an up-and-down past few years on tour. But leaving this one on the table is surely going to hurt for a long time. And the large percentage of Jordan Spieth bettors who missed out on a big payday are certainly going to be hurting for a while, as well.
