2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic One and Done Picks: Good Week to Take a Swing on Ludvig Aberg

The PGA Tour heads to Detroit for the Rocket Mortgage Classic, a tournament that is a far cry from a major, but each week brings unique fields and storylines. Detroit Golf Club is a super gettable course, and the field is full of guys looking to solidify their status and gain some momentum heading into the Open Championship. For One and Done, it is a week to look at some players who normally aren’t in the conversation and try to find golfers who can bank some money. Here are a few guys worth considering for Rocket Mortgage Classic One and Done picks.

Rocket Mortgage Classic One and Done Picks and Targets

Safe Pick: Hideki Matsuyama

The winning score could honestly approach -30, which means just hitting good iron shots is not enough. That is usually where the breaking point is for Matsuyama, who is dominant on the approach but at times struggles to convert. He is in form and coming off another quality showing last week at Travelers where he once again leaned on his ball striking. He will need to take apart these gettable par 5’s and make as many putts as possible to really get in the mix.

It is not like Matsuyama cannot win at this type of event, and his -23 at the Sony Open last year is proof he can go low on an easy course. If the putter cooperates, he can win the tournament, so do not be afraid to deploy him in this spot.

Contrarian Pick: Ludvig Aberg

Time will tell on how risky this pick ultimately is, as a lot is still unknown about Aberg. He came onto the scene with a lot of hype, and so far it is pretty easy to see why people were excited about him. He has all the skills, is already making cuts and looks to be a future top-end player on tour. It is still early to gauge if Aberg will like this type of golf, but he was double-digit under par last week at the Travelers in another birdie fest.

Naturally, when looking at One and Done late in the season, two major factors are relevant. The first is who is available, and Aberg should be eligible since he is so new on tour. The second is where one stands overall, as it may be better to take a riskier pick or perhaps someone more conservative to protect the lead. For those who do want to roll the dice, Aberg has all the talent in the world, and maybe this is his first of many big-time results.

Ben Rasa’s One and Done Pick: Cameron Davis

Davis should be a somewhat popular One and Done choice for a few reasons. First, he is a previous winner here in Detroit, so it is clear he can thrive on this course and with this type of attack golf. Second, he closed with some momentum last week, and his off-tee game seems to be poised to take apart these scoring holes. Finally, Davis is not a prominent name on tour, so most likely he is available. He sits in the mid-30s in the outright market, and with the right putting week, he could add a second Rocket Mortgage win to his resume.
