Best Mets-Red Sox MLB Bet: Pete Alonso Overrated (July 23)

The New York Mets are one of the most disappointing teams in Major League Baseball. After emptying the purse over the offseason, the Mets are just 46-52 and in fourth place in the NL East. The organization is already talking about shipping out Justin Verlander, who was one of their biggest recent acquisitions. They’ll take on the Red Sox on Sunday Night Baseball in a series rubber match. Let’s jump into the game to find a Mets-Red Sox MLB bet at the current odds.

Best Mets-Red Sox MLB Bet: Pete Alonso Overrated

MLB Mets-Red Sox odds, via BetRivers Sportsbook
Mets: +120 | Red Sox: -141
Mets +1.5: -167 | Red Sox: -1.5 +138
Over 10.5: -110 | Under 10.5: -109

The Mets might have spent big this offseason, but one of their biggest disappointments is mainstay Pete Alonso. The All-Star first baseman and longtime Met has a .211 average in 2023. That is 60 points below his .271 finish in 2022 and .261 average in 2021. Alonso has hit 26 home runs and is in jeopardy of going below his 40-home run mark he set last year and the 37 he hit in 2021. To put those in perspective, Alonso knocked 53 out of the park in his rookie season of 2019.

Pete has never been known for his hit tool, but this year’s results are particularly weak. Some of that is bad luck; Alonso has a minuscule .193 BABIP this year, which is well below his average. However some of that number could also be a result of poorer exit velocity. The bottom line is that Alonso is getting a bit more love in MLB prob bet markets than he deserves.

You can grab a Mets-Red Sox bet for Sunday Night Baseball at a strong number for one prob bet. Pete Alonso under 1.5 total bases is currently priced at -122 at BetRivers. The bet has a 57% win percentage and true odds that should be -131. You’ll grab a small 3% positive expected value on this MLB bet for something to sweat in Sunday’s night cap. If you’re using the Kelly Criterion for bankroll management, you’ll want to put down about 1.4% of your bankroll.
