Dallas Mavericks star Luka Doncic has asserted his dominance in the league for the past three years, but perhaps the 2022-23 season is when he really takes the next step toward becoming the league’s best player and MVP.
With the NBA season coming up next month, bettors are beginning to gauge where the profit is for some future bets. And while some of the usual names are among MVP favorites (Kevin Durant Giannis Antetokounmpo, Joel Embiid, etc.), Doncic is the consensus favorite to win the award this season.
Luka Doncic Favored to Win 2023 NBA MVP
Prior to the season, Doncic spoke on what it would mean for him to win an NBA MVP.
"Hopefully, MVP is unbelievable," Doncic said during an appearance on ESPN's "NBA Today". "If I could be named MVP would be enormous accomplishment. I’ll be so happy, but you never know. I hope I’m in that conversation."
Last season, Doncic averaged 28.4 points, 9.1 rebounds, and 8.7 assists in 65 games, leading the Mavericks to an upset win over the Phoenix Suns in the playoffs. But they would eventually go down to the eventual NBA Champion, Golden State Warriors.
In the offseason, the Mavericks lost guard Jalen Brunson, but were able to add big men Christian Wood and JaVale Mcgee to their roster for the upcoming season.
Still, the Mavericks are missing a second true star to pair with Doncic, which has been the knock on them in recent years.
Given Doncic's standing as one of the best scorers we've ever seen in the NBA, perhaps it's time for Dallas to make the next step. And in order to do so, they might need to be active in terms of in-season transactions.
