Will Zalatoris Withdraws From Tour Championship Due to Back Injury, Out of FedExCup Contention

For PGA star Will Zalatoris, his back injury could not have come at a worse time.

After securing his first ever PGA win at the FedEx St. Jude Championship a couple of weeks ago, Zalatoris was forced to withdraw from the BMW Championship last weekend after tweaking his back during an errant drive.

Originally, Zalatoris planned to return for this weekend’s Tour Championship. But that won’t be happening now either.

Today, Zalatoris announced that he will be withdrawing from this weekend’s tournament. He will also miss the President’s Cup next month.

“He is also very disappointed that he will not have the opportunity to play in next month’s Presidents Cup, where he was hoping to play for Captain [Davis] Love and represent the United States,” Zalatoris’ agent, Allen Hobbs, said in a statement to ESPN. “… He is fully focused on getting healthy and back onto the course as soon as he is able.”

Going into the Tour Championship, Zalatoris was in third position in the FedEx Cup playoffs points standings and would have started just three strokes behind leader Scottie Scheffler this weekend.

Now, Zalatoris will have no chance to come away with the $18 million awarded to the winner of the FedEx Cup championship.

After pulling out of the BMW Championship, Zalatoris’ agent explained the injury that occurred in the middle of the round.

“Will tweaked his lower back during a shot on the 3rd hole today. After getting it worked on and the pain not subsiding, he felt that it was best to withdraw from the BMW Championship so he can work with his trainer,” the statement read.
